Lesson 2.1
Calculating a Specified Measures of Position in
Quartiles of a Set of data
What’s In
Median is the middle value in the list of numbers arranged in
ascending/descending order. It divides the distribution into two equal parts. One-half
of the distribution lies below it and one-half above it.
Here are the scores of 15 students in a quiz, 8, 12, 10, 15, 16, 20 ,19, 11, 13,
18, 17, 16, 14, 10, 20, what is the median?
What’s New
Directions: Arrange the following in ascending order.
1.
2.
3. 15, 12, 18, 20, 14, 16
4. 10, 8,5, 6, 7, 4
5. 2.09, 2.90, 2.10, 2.01
What Is It
Measures of position is a method to see where a certain data point or value
falls in a distribution. It tells us whether the value is low, average or high. It can also
show how to values the different distributions or measurement scales compare.
Sometimes it can be applied to ordinal like first, second… and so on.
Ungrouped data is also known as raw data. It is data that has not been placed in any
group or category after collection. While grouped data is a data which is classified into
various groups and a table created after collection.

Median
To find the quartile values is to find the median of the data set, then find the
median of the upper and the lower halves of the data set.
For example: {3, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19, 25}
The number of data values is 9 which is odd number. The median is 12 in the 5 th data
value.
{3, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19, 25}
For the lower halves, since the number of elements is even(4), get the average
of the middle two values.
{3, 6, 7, 10}
6+7 13
Thus, = = 6.5 the median of the lower halves
2 2
For the upper halves, since the number of elements is also even(4), get the
average of the middle two values.
{15, 17, 19, 25}
17 + 19 36
Thus, = = 18 the median of the upper halves
2 2
𝑸𝟏 = 𝟔. 𝟓 𝑸𝟐 = 𝟏𝟐 𝑸𝟑 = 𝟏𝟖
Therefore First Quartile is 6.5,
Second Quartile is 12
Third Quartile is 18.
Other Methods of solving Quartile for Ungrouped data:
1. Mendenhall and Sincich Method.
A method used by statistics for engineering and sciences in finding the quartile
value. To find the quartile value using this method with n elements,
1
a. 𝐿𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑒(𝐿) = 𝑃𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑄1 = 4 (𝑛 + 1) and round to the nearest integer.
If L falls halfway between two integers, round up.
4
3
b. 𝑈𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑒(𝑈) = 𝑃𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑄2 = 4 (𝑛 + 1) and round to the nearest integer. If
U falls halfway between two integers, round down.
Example:
Group of students got the following scores in a quiz. 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15. Find
the lower Quartile and Upper Quartile value.
a. To find for 𝑄1:
1
Position of 𝑄1 = 4 (𝑛 + 1)
1
𝑄1 = 4 (9 + 1) The computed value is 2.5 rounding up
1
𝑄1 = 4 (10) becomes 3. The lower quartile is the 3rd
10
𝑄1 = elements in the data set so 𝑄1 = 7
4
𝑄1 = 2.5
b. To find for 𝑄3 :
3
Position of 𝑄3 = 4 (𝑛 + 1)
3
𝑄3 = 4 (9 + 1) The computed value is 7.5 rounding
3
𝑄3 = 4 (10) down becomes 7. The upper quartile is
30
𝑄3 = the 7th element in the data set so 𝑄3 = 11.
4
𝑄3 = 7.5
2. Linear Interpolation:
Example:

4
𝑄1 = 2.5
Interpolate the value to obtain the 𝑄1.
a. Subtract the 2nd value from the 3rd value
7−6=1
b. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in second step.
1(. 5) = .5
c. Add the result in step 2 to the smaller number
6 + .5 = 6.5
Therefore the value of 𝑸𝟏 = 𝟔. 𝟓
b. Finding the Upper Quartile (𝑄3 ) using linear interpolation
Solution:
Steps:
Arrange the scores in ascending order
5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15
Locate the position of the scores in the distribution
3
Position of 𝑄3 = 4 (𝑛 + 1)
3
𝑄3 = (9 + 1)

𝑄3 = 7.5
Interpolate the value to obtain the 𝑄1.
a. Subtract the 7th value from the 8𝑡ℎ value
13 − 11 = 2
b. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in second step.
2(. 5) = 1
c. Add the result in step 2 to the smaller number
11 + 1 = 12
Therefore the value of 𝑸𝟑 = 𝟏𝟐

Lesson 2.2
Calculating a Specified Measures of Position in
Decile of a Set of Data
What’s In
In the previous lesson , you learned that quartiles is one of the measures of
position in which the data is divided into four equal parts. For ungrouped data quartile
formula is
𝑘𝑁
𝑘 −𝑐𝑓𝑏
4
𝑄𝑘 = 4 (𝑛 + 1) while for the grouped data is 𝑄𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( ) 𝑖.
𝑓𝑄𝐾
What Is It
The Deciles for Ungrouped Data
The deciles are the nine score points which divide a distribution into 10
equal parts. Deciles are denoted as 𝐷1 , 𝐷2 , 𝐷3 , …, 𝐷9 and are computed in the
same way that the quartiles are calculated.
𝑫𝟏 𝑫𝟐 𝑫𝟑 𝑫𝟒 𝑫𝟓 𝑫𝟔 𝑫𝟕 𝑫𝟖 𝑫𝟗

𝐷3 = 10 (10 + 1)
3
𝐷3 = 10 (11)
33
𝐷3 = 10
𝐷3 = 3.3 ≈ 3
𝑫𝟑 is the 3rd element.
Therefore, 𝑫𝟑 = 𝟐𝟎
THE DECILES FOR GROUPED DATA
Deciles are those values that divides the total frequency into 10 equal parts.
The Dk is computed as follows:
𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
100
𝐷𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( )𝑖
𝑓𝐷𝐾
where:
𝐿𝐵 = lower boundary of the 𝐷𝑘 class
𝑁 = total frequency
𝑐𝑓𝑏 = cumulative frequency of the class before the 𝐷𝑘
𝑓𝑃𝑘 = frequency of the 𝐷𝑘 class
𝑖 = size of class interval
𝑘 = nth decile, where 𝑛 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 9
Example:
Using the table below, Calculate the 6th decile of 20 Student’s
Summative Test Scores.
Score Frequency Lower Less than

𝐷6 = 34.5 + ( )5
5
3
𝐷6 = 34.5 + (5) 5
𝐷6 = 34.5 + 3
𝐷6 = 37.5
Therefore, The 6th decile is equivalent to the 60th percentile. Therefore,
60% of the students got a score less than or equal to 37.5.
