SCHOOL BILDING PROJECT REPORT 2022
INTRODUCTION
We have great pleasure to present a report of the project works under taken by
the 2nd squad of final year Civil Engineering students of Indira Gandhi Polytechnic
College,Cherukunnam, Project work is a part of syllabus of the final year Civil
Engineering course. The aim of the project is to get thorough knowledge and
sophisticated architectural beauty with most economy.
Degrading condition of school building and its existence are not new such
incidents have become frequent due to buildings becoming A healthy working
environment in offices is only possible when officers are provided with adequate
facilities, not only related to working, but also a safe and sound infrastructure.
Considering the situation, we thought about the reconstruction of an office building. We
selected the school building at Alappuzha, the building is in degrading condition. The
building situated in municipality town area. Considering such office buildings rules we
developed a plan, designed the structural members and estimated cost.
The team members were very co-operative with each other in bringing out this
project successfully. The project work deals with the planning, structural design and
estimate of all the requirement of an “SCHOOL BUILDING” we have designed a real
building

SCHOOL BILDING PROJECT REPORT 2022
4. ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT
4.1 SELECTION OF SITE
The principal consideration for all type of construction is selection of site. The site selected for
the proposed project is school building at Alappuzha. The plans to be born in mind while selecting
a site. The soil at site should have sufficient safe bearing capacity. The building shall have utilities
like electricity, water supply, transportation etc… The building can be constructed according to
the legal aspects. So, there is no disturbance for the construction available in the nearby locality.
While considering merits & demerits the plot does not provided best facilities. It is not possible to
select a site which has only merits. So, we have selected this site for the execution of the project
4.2 SITE SURVEYING
The structure is planned according to the nature of site. So a clear idea about surface is required
during planning and designing. According to Kerala building rule, a project report must contain a
site plan which is drawn to a scale not less than 1:400. Site plan preparation is done during
surveying and plotting rule, a project report must contain a site plan which is drawn to a scale not
less than 1:400. Site plan preparation is done during surveying and plotting.
4.3 SURVEYING
It is the art of taking measurements which will determine the relative position of various parts of
the surface of the earth. During surveying the necessary measurements must be taken to plot the
site plan and locate various features. Hence employed the chain surveying in which surveying and
plotting can be done simultaneously. Surveying is primarily divided in to;
4. Reconnaissance Survey
The preliminary examination of the ground to find out the suitable type of survey to be conducted to see
how best the work can be arranged. This survey is carried out to get an idea of the area to be surveyed. The
method employed in reconnaissance survey is as follows; The surveyor in the aspects the site as decided
the possible arrangements of the network such frame works as fairly level ground & free from obstructions.
During the reconnaissance survey a neat sketch of key plan is prepared.
Chain Survey: - Chain survey is the simplest methods of measuring the linear measurement with tape or
chain. These are the methods to measure the distance in the work. This site is approximately flat and it is
free from all the types of obstacles. Detailed
DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGINEERING 9 IGPTC, PERUMBAVOOR
SCHOOL BILDING PROJECT REPORT 2022
DETAILED SURVEY: It includes the full details of the site showing its boundaries,
general features, like existing buildings, approach to road, area of the land, detailed
drawings of the site in a suitable
4. PREPARATION OF SITE PLAN
Site plan may be defined as the projection of ground and the features up on it as a
horizontal plan, the line and regular measurement drawn being only horizontal
dimension. For a building construction site plan is essential. This plan is prepared for
showing the boundaries of land, nature of ground, existing features, north direction,
creation of proposed work etc…
5. PLANNING OF BUILDING
The building should be planned to make it comfortable, economical & to meet all the
requirements. The attempt of the planners should be to attain maximum convenience
with the limited money available, functional utility, cost, habitat requirements etc.
Circulation area should be minimum possible without affecting other requirements &
convenience. The spacing of the building with respect to geographical direction, the
direction of wind and the altitude and azimuth of the sun known as the orientation is
fixed by also considering the frontage of the building. To start with all the requirements
should be collected & then planning should be taken up.
CONSIDERATION FOR COST EFFECTING
A square plan is cheaper because the perimeter or walling of a square building may
be 15- 25% less than a rectangular one of the same area. It is therefore desirable to
plan or design a building as far as possible a square. The possible numbers of room
should be reduced & the size of room should be made bigger to economize the cost
but the size of room will depend on the requirements & purpose for which they are
built & these accepts for economy cannot be applied in general.
Area occupied by walls is about 15-25% of plinth area. Area of veranda & passage may
be taken at 15% plinth area. Latrine should be at the rate of 1/6 no‟ s. Height of wall
should be less than 3m.

SCHOOL BILDING PROJECT REPORT 2022
DESIGNING
A building has two basic parts foundation and super structure. Foundation is the lower
portion of the building usually located below the ground level, which transmit the load
of super structure to the supporting soil. The portion of the building above the ground
level is known as the super structure. A part of super structure between the ground
level and floor is known as plinth. The built up &covered area measured at the floor
level is known as plinth area.

6. SPECIFICATION
Drawing of a structure will show the proportions and relative positions of its various
parts. It is not possible to furnish the data regarding the quality of materials and
workmanship on the drawing due to shortage of space. Hence this information regarding
thequality of materials and workmanship is conveyed in separate contrast document which
is known as the specification for the work.
OBJECT OF SPECIFICATION
The main object of the specifications is to state the information which the engineer wants
to convey so as to fulfill the needs of this design. The ideal specification framed by the
engineer aim to protect the owner from any damage due to bad workmanship or low quality
materials and the same time maximum freedom to perform the work is given to contractor
so as to turn out a satisfactory end product. The specification of a work is mainly for the
following object
1. Specification defines the quality of materials and
workmanship for the contractor who is filling the tender
for the different items of work.
2. The information and instructions contained in the specifications
will serve as the guide to the contractor as well as to the
supervising staff during the execution of the work.
DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGINEERING 22 IGPTC, PERUMBAVOOR
SCHOOL BILDING PROJECT REPORT 2022
IMPORTANCE OF SPECIFICATION
The drawing and specification form two important documents. Information (such as
dimensions, ty pe of construction etc.) can be easily expressed graphically are put on the
drawings. On the other hand, instructions, which can be easily expressed will in words, are
written in the specification. But generally the provision in the specifications are given morelegal
strength and most of the contracts states that in case of discrepancy between the drawings and
specifications, the provision of specifications shall govern. Thus, the specification play as
important part in construction work and high responsibility is attachedto the specification writer
for this job.
TYPES OF SPECIFICATIONS
The specifications are broadly divided into two categories:
• Brief specification.
• Detail specification
DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGINEERING 23 IGPTC, PERUMBAVOOR
SCHOOL BILDING PROJECT REPORT 2022
Brief Specification
While preparing the estimate, the quantity surveyor writes down the brief description of
every item. These are known as brief specification and they do not for part of contract
document they are only useful to the person preparing the estimate.
Detailed Specification
The detailed specification forms a part of contract document and they are divided in to
threegroup.
□ General provision
□ Technical provision
□ Standard provision
EARTH WORK IN EXCAVATION OF FOUNDATION TRENCHES:
Before the earth work is started, the whole areas were the work is to be done shall be cleared
of tree and other organic matter. The excavation shall be carried out exactly in accordance
with the dimensions shown on the drawing or such other dimensions. Sides of the trenches
shall be vertical and its bottom shall be perfectly leveled, both the longitudinally and
transversely. If the excavation is in loose earth, the bottom of the trenches shall be sprinkled
with a little water and rammed. No material excavated from foundation, shall be placed
nearer than one meter to the outer edges of the excavation. The cost of all materials and labor
required for fencing in and protection against risk of accidents due to open excavation
shall be provided.
CEMENT CONCRETE 1:1.5:3
Materials
□ Coarse aggregate: coarse aggregate may be gravel and it shall be sound, hard,
clean, and suitably graded in size. Size of the coarse aggregate shall be retained in a
5mm square mesh.
□ Fine aggregate: Fine aggregate most of which passes through 4.75mm IS sieve is
known as fine aggregate.
□ Cement: It shall be fresh Portland cement and confirm to the IS 269

SCHOOL BUILDING PROJECT REPORT -2022
CONCLUSION
In this report planning, designing, estimating and costing of the chool
building at Alappuzha has been carried out. We are happy to state that we have
completed the project to the best of our knowledge and abilities.
We had gone through the Kerala Panchayat Building Rules to
know about the details regarding the occupancy and general requirements, which gave
us a new experience. The drafting was completely carried out in AUTOCAD 2018.
Designing was carried out manually in accordance with the relevant IS Codesand the
structural members were found to be safe in Limit State of Collapse and Serviceability
We hope that we presented the project report successfully. During
the project work we had faced a lot of difficulties. However, we were able to overcome
these difficulties due to the co-operation between the group members and the help and
guidance received from our guide. This project work helped us a lot to understand the
practical difficulties that may arise throughout a work and we wereable to apply
what we had studied.
We conclude the report with sincere gratitude to all, for their valuable help and
guidance. Let us hope that the sincere effort made for this project bear fruits in
future.
