Tauron – Poland, Welnowiec

Tauron had an old 110kV substation placed on the

roof of the building composed just by
disconnectors on lines bays and disconnectors on
trafo bays.
Customer need
Increse the reliability by retrofitting and extending
the substation architecture, but keeping the
limited space on the roof of the building.
ABB response
Compact H4 substation on the roof of the building
made with 2 PASS M0 Double circuit breaker.
Customer benefit
New, realiable substation with: 4 circuit breakers,
Disconnecting/earthing switch on trafo, line and
bus-bar sidem, CT on line and trafo side, and
surge arresters.

Proven uses of PASS: Difficult accessibility
Edison – Italy, Fontanamora hydropower plant

EDISON Edison had to increase the voltage level of the

Fontanamora
power plant access
distribution substation in a small hydro power plant
stairway from medium to high voltage.
Issues to solve:
 Access to the powerhouse is only possible by
way of a steep, narrow stairway down the side of
the river gorge .
 Entrance to the powerhouse is small, and the
room available for installing switchgear is only
three square meters wide.
ABB response
ABB has studied a PASS that integrates a circuit
breaker, two disconnectors, plus current and voltage
transformers and the control and protection relay in a
single unit. Plug-in cable terminals further increase
compactness.
This compact unit can be dropped down the gorge
with a crane.

Sonelgaz – Metka for Algeria

PASS 420 kV Sonelgaz needed to connect the power generating

source to the Algerian transmission grid and gives
fast track projects this task to the Greek EPC METKA
Issues to solve:
 Quickly connect the power source to the grid
before the summer peak demand.
 Remoteness of the installation makes the civil
works expensive for the EPC
ABB response
Metka awarded the project to ABB.
With PASS technology, a complete 420 kV bay
equipped with protection and control can be installed
on a standard semi-trailer.
Thanks to the rotation of the insulator, it can be easily
transported and quickly delivered.

per year of emission-free energy, enough to cover
substsation electricity demand for about 17.000 households. The
power plant, established in 1947, has been now
completely refurbished.
Issues to solve:
 Fast delivery and installation
 Limited out of service
ABB response
PASS M0H encloses all functions of a complete
switchyard in a single subassembly designed for
connections to the high voltage network with an H

Oil field
high voltage switchyard to Lukoil, a major oil
company. The switchyard have to be installed in a
number of well pad.
Issues to solve:
 The security costs in the area are extremely high,
making a necessity to have an equipment to
install rapidly.
 For the same reason, it is mandatory to have an
equipment which has to be outdoor but achieving
extremely low maintenence requirement.
ABB response

company, had to retrofit a number of switchgears for
their two phases, 145 kV and 16,7 Hertz frequency
converter and traction railway substations.
Issues to solve:
 Deusche Bahn had always been forced to select
oversized 245 kV AIS switchgears, since the
standard 145 kv equipment can’t support the 16,7
Hz requirement.
ABB response
By using the innovative Motor Drive, the travel curve
of the circuit breaker can be adjusted to meet non-
standard frequencies, such as the 16,7 Hz. PASS
has been configured in a customized two-phases
module.

them, a made-to-measure 145 kV
solution that is allowing them to save the
resources they they were using
previously selecting a 245 kV standard
product.
• Superior reliability compared to the
previous AIS solution
• Integrated bay diagnostic thanks to
Motor Drive
ABB has studied the solution with Deusche
Bahn winning five frame agreement in a
row and delivering more than 200 modules.
Proven uses of PASS: Pollution
HEXCEL – USA

HEXCEL Hexcel is a leading advanced composite company. In

PASS substation their facility in Salt Lake city, Utah, Hexcel had an issue
during
commissioning regarding the quality of the power supply to the factory.

Issues to solve:

Because of the pollution of the environment due the

industrial powders, the conventional air-insulated
disconnectors had frequent flashovers, which
compromised the quality of the energy supply to the
manufacturing plants.

ABB response

The Hybrid switchgear PASS encloses all the high

voltage bay key-functions, included the disconnectors, in
a pressurized aluminum tank filled with SF6 gas.

Customer benefit

This means that the disconneting contact are protected

from the dusts, making PASS the ideal solution for
industrial or mining sites.

Sierra Gorda mine – Chile

PASS M0S 245 kV Customer Need

Sierra Gorda
substation erection
• After the 2010 earthquake the customer needed to
& commissioning have a product able to withstand tough seismic
requirements for a new substation.

• The customer was evaluating solutions alternative to

AIS also because the civil work costs in isolated areas
(such as the mining site) was very high.

• Being a mine, the pollution of the enviroment was a

relevant factor to be considered.

ABB response

• PASS, thanks to the low baricenter, is a product

extremely resilient to earthquakes

• Gas-insulated enclosed disconnector grants reliability

for polluted environments

Customer benefit

• PASS feature of fast erection & commissioning enable

relevant savings in the installation costs

• Outdoor installation in mining field

solution for
mining
• BMA needed several compact and safe skid-
PASS M00 72,5 kV mounted substations to use in their mines.
ABB response
• PASS module enables extremely compact –skid
mounted substation, compared to AIS solutions.
• ABB also studied and implemented a mechanical
interlocking system to enable a no-mistake chain
sequence for operating the hybrid modules.
Customer benefit
• BMA has been provided with a compact skid,
which can be easily moved into and outside their
mines. Moreover, thanks to the interlocking
system, the mining staff can operate and maintain
