How does the amazing colors in a fireworks made? What makes it possible? An exploding firework is essentially
a number of chemical reactions happening simultaneously when the heat is added. It provides enough activation energy
to make the solid chemical compounds back inside. The firework burn with oxygen in the air and convert themselves
into other chemicals releasing smoke and excess gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen in the
process, chemical reaction played a vital role in the magnificent firework display.
What is chemical reaction? Chemical reaction is a process by which chemicals interact to form new chemicals
with different compositions or simply the process where reactants are transformed into new products just like the
fireworks. The reactants are the fireworks and the fire will react to one another resulting to a colorful firework display
also known as the product. So, how is this possible? This is possible because of collision.
What is collision theory? The collision theory states that particles must collide with one another in order for
reaction to occur the particles also require enough energy and enough speed to break and form bonds when they collide.
The minimum energy required for reaction to occur is known as activation energy. Some reactions may require very
little but some need a lot more energy to get started. Collision frequency is directly proportional to the rate of reaction
just like the molecules in this moving picture the greater the frequency of collisions the lower the rate of reaction.
Factors Affecting the Rate of Reaction
1. Reactant Concentration. Increasing the concentration of one or more reactants will often increase the rate of
reaction. This occurs because a higher concentration of reactant will lead to more collision of that reactant and low
concentration leads a lesser collision between particles.
2. Increase in Temperature. An increase in temperature also increases the rate of reaction and an increase in
temperature will raise the average kinetic energy of the reactant molecules. Kinetic energy refers to the energy associated
to the particles in motion.
3. Proper Orientation of Molecules. Even if the two molecules collide with sufficient activation energy, there is
no guarantee that the collision will be successful, the reason for this is that, molecules also need to collide with the right
orientation so that the proper atoms line up with one another and bonds can break and reform in the necessary position.
That is why properly oriented molecules lead to more effective collisions.
4. Presence of Catalyst. A catalyst is a substance that accelerates a reaction by participating in it without being
consumed, it also provides an alternate reaction pathway to obtain products.
Almost everything in our daily life depends on catalyst, just like the production of the following; plastics, soap,
the food we eat, fertilizers, synthetic materials, converters and even the human body, catalysts are truly a fundamental
part of our daily life.
Activity 3. Is it Increase or Decrease
Instruction. Complete the following table by indicating whether each of the following scenarios would either increase or
decrease the rate of reaction. The first one has been done for you.
Scenario Increase or Decrease
Example: Adding heat Increase
1. Removing heat
2. Adding a catalyst
3. Diluting a solution
4. Removing an enzyme (catalyst)
5. Lowering the temperature
6. Increasing the temperature
7. Decreasing the surface area
8. Increasing the concentration of a solution
9. Breaking a reactant down into smaller
pieces
The Difference Between Physical Change and Chemical Change
Physical Change Chemical Change
no new substances are formed new substances are formed
the composition of the substance is retained the composition of the substance is being changed
the product may or may not be reversible the product is not reversible
Activity 4. Is it Chemical or Physical Change
Instruction: Identify the following statement if it is physical change or chemical change, then explain your answer.
1. cutting of paper- ________________, __________________________________________________________
2. rusting of iron-__________________, __________________________________________________________
3. fermentation of fruit juice-________________, ___________________________________________________
4. breaking of glass-________________, __________________________________________________________
Importance of Chemical Reactions
Chemical reactions are the most important types of events in the universe. It's through chemical reactions that
plants grow, produce fruit, and become compost for new plants. It is because of chemical reactions that human beings
(and all other animals) reproduce, digest, grow, heal, and think.
Chemical reactions are at the heart of literally every biological process in the universe. Stars form because of
chemical reactions; our sun ignited because of chemical reactions in its core. Life developed on Earth as a result of
chemical reactions.
The "circle of life" is, at its heart, a series of chemical reactions. Even our ability to think and move is a result of
chemical reactions that occur in our bodies.
