Section 103 - Classification of Structures

The document discusses Section 103 of the National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015 regarding the classification of structures. It describes classifying structures based on their occupancy and nature into five categories - Essential Facilities (Category I), Hazardous Facilities (Category II), Special Occupancy Structures (Category III), Standard Occupancy Structures (Category IV), and Miscellaneous Structures (Category V). It provides examples of structures that fall under each category. It also discusses assigning structures to multiple categories and determining the classification for structures with multiple uses or occupancies. The document then discusses Section 208 regarding calculating the design base shear for earthquake loads.

STRUCTURES

NATIONAL STRUCTURAL CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES 2015

SECTION 103
CLASSIFICATION OF STRUCTURES
 103.1 Nature of Occupancy

Buildings and other structures shall be classified,

based on the nature of occupancy, according to
Table 103-1 for purposes of applying WIND and
EARTHQUAKE LOADS in CHAPTER 2.

NATIONAL STRUCTURAL CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES 2015 (NSCP C101-15)

SECTION 103
CLASSIFICATION OF STRUCTURES
 103.1 Nature of Occupancy

Each building or other structures shall be

assigned to the highest applicable occupancy
category or categories.

NATIONAL STRUCTURAL CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES 2015 (NSCP C101-15)

SECTION 103
CLASSIFICATION OF STRUCTURES
 103.1 Nature of Occupancy

Assignment of the same structure to multiple

occupancy categories based on use and the type
of loading condition being evaluated (e.g. wind or
seismic) shall be permissible.

NATIONAL STRUCTURAL CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES 2015 (NSCP C101-15)

SECTION 103
CLASSIFICATION OF STRUCTURES
 103.1 Nature of Occupancy

When buildings or other structures have multiple

uses (occupancies), the relationship between the
uses of various parts of the building of other
structure and the independence of the structural
system for those various parts shall be examined.

NATIONAL STRUCTURAL CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES 2015 (NSCP C101-15)

SECTION 103
CLASSIFICATION OF STRUCTURES
 103.1 Nature of Occupancy

The classification for each independent structural

of a multiple-use building or other structure shall
be that of the highest usage group in any part of
the building or other structure that is dependent
on that basic structural system.
