Calculation of Pseudo-Critical Gas Properties Using Sutton's Correlation

The document outlines Sutton's correlation for estimating pseudo-critical pressure (Ppc) and temperature (Tpc) based on gas gravity (γh). It details a procedure for determining γh based on the composition of the gas mixture, including corrections for CO2, nitrogen, and H2S. Finally, it provides equations to calculate the pseudo-critical properties for both hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon components in the gas mixture.

Calculation of Pseudo-critical Gas Properties Using Sutton’s Correlation

Sutton developed a correlation for estimating for estimating Ppc and Tpc as functions of gas
gravity, γg thus:

Ppch  756.8  131.0 h  3.6 h2        2.13

Tpch  169.2  349.5 h  74.0 h2        2.14

Where Ppch and Tpch are the pseudo-critical pressure and pseudo-critical temperature of the
hydrocarbon components alone, respectively, and γh is the specific gravity of the
hydrocarbon alone.

Sutton’s Procedure is as follows:

1. Determine γh

A. If the gas mixture contains <12 mol% of CO2, < 3% of Nitrogen and no H2S,
then the parameter γh is the given gas gravity; no need for any correction.

B. However, If gas mixture contains >12 mol% of CO2, OR >3% of Nitrogen OR

any H2S, then the given gas gravity need to be corrected to obtain parameter
γh determined thus:
 w  1.1767y H S  1.5196yCO  0.9672y N  0.622 y H O
h  2 2 2 2
     2.15
1  y H 2 S  yCO2  y N 2  y H 2O

2. Determine the pseudo-critical pressure and temperature for the hydrocarbon

mixture using equations 2.13 and 2.14.

3. Determine the pseudo-pressure and pseudo-temperature for the entire mixture

(hydrocarbon + non-hydrocarbon) using the following equations:

Ppc  (1  yH 2 s  yCO2  yN2  yH 2o ) Ppch  1306yH 2s  1071yCO2  493.1yN2  3200.1yH 2o    2.16

Tpc  (1  yH 2s  yCO2  yN2  yH 2o )Tpch  672.35yH 2s  547.58yCO2  227.16 yN2  1164.9 yH 2o    2.17
