SELF LEARNING KIT IN SCIENCE GRADE 3
FIRST QUARTER
WEEK 3
Our Lesson
STATES OF MATTER
In this module, we will be discussing the states of matter and their characteristics. It will help the
learners to classify or group the objects or materials based on the three states of matter. The learners will be able
to group common materials found at home as to solid, liquid and gas.
Our Target
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:
1. describe the characteristics of each state of matter
2. classify the characteristics of each state of matter
3. identify the liquids that flow fast and flow slowly
4. describe how solids, liquids and gases occupy space
Let’s
Trythe letter of the correct answer on the space provided.
Write
________1. What will happen to a big ball when you put it inside the plastic bag?
a. The ball occupies its space inside the plastic bag.
b. It will change the shape of the ball
c. The ball changes its size.
d. The color of the ball will change
________2. Which materials flow the fastest?
a. Lotion b. toothpaste c. water d. syrup
________3. Which of the following object is solid?
a. Marbles b. soy sauce c. air d. water
________4. Which solid objects can occupy more space?
a. Book b. pencil c. coin d. ruler
________5. Which has the greatest mass?
a. a bowl of sugar c. A teaspoon of salt
b. a tablespoon of flour d. a cup of cotton balls
Let’s Explore
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Everything you see around you, including yourself,
is made up of matter.

Concept
States of Matter
Matter exists in three states: solid, liquid and gas.
Solid
o It has definite shape, size and volume
o It has its own shape and size
o The molecules of solid are closely and tightly arranged
o NO two solids can occupy the same space at the same time.
o Solid can occupy space and have mass
o The size and shape of solid things can change when it is cut, hammered, or
torn apart.
o The texture of solid can be rough, smooth, soft and hard.

OTHER PROPERTIES OF MATTER
Book Block of wood Hallow Block Spoon and fork
Liquid
o Has a definite volume but it does not have a definite shape and size. It
takes the shape of its container.
o The molecules of liquids are not compressed. They have space
between them and not strongly bound to each other.
o The characteristics of a liquid is to flow. Some liquid flow easily, while
others flow slowly.
o Liquid has a mass.
o Liquids have different odors. Some liquids have no smell.
o Liquids have different tastes and color
o Liquids have different temperature
Example of Liquids:
Fish sauce Water Liquid gel soap Toothpaste
Gas
o Does not have a definite size, shape and volume.
o Gas molecules are scattered distantly from each other.
o Gas takes the shapes and sizes of its container.
o Many gases are found in nature. The air that human, plants and
animals need is a gas. Oxygen is an air needed by human and
animals to breathe in, while plants need carbon dioxide to make
their food.
Examples of Gas:
Oxygen tank Insecticide balloon
spray

Activity 1.4: Matters Found at Home
I. Objective:
Classify Matters Found at Home.
II. Materials
Pen and paper
Objects found at home
III. Procedure:
1. Bring out your paper and pen. Ask permission to your parents or guardian to go around inside
your house especially in the kitchen, dining and living room.
2. List down all the objects that you found in different parts of your house.
3. Now, divide your paper into three parts then classify the objects that you listed into solid, liquid,
and gas.
