Exercise 1

The following are simple sentence, therefore made up of one independent clause. Identify
the subject(s) and verb(s) in each. The first is done for you. You may find it easier to
print the exercise and identify the subject by underlining once and the verb by
underlining twice.

1. The sun shone all week.

2. He left this morning.

3. The sound shattered the glass.

4. The move cost us money and was a real disruption.

5. Jack seems happy at his new job.

6. The girl in the red sweater has gone.

7. Rivers run. Birds fly. Fish swim. People talk.

8. There are two reasons for the change in policy.

9. Are you coming to the party?

10. There are exceptions to every rule.
