Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 8
Orani National Highschool
December 11, 2016
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 100% of the students should be able to attain 85% of
proficiency to:
1. Define rocks
2. Identify the different types of rocks
3. Illustrate the Rock Cycle
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Rocks
B. Concept: The Earth’s building materials are the rocks. That is why the Earth is
often called “a ball of rock.” Rocks are combinations of minerals in varying
proportions. Rocks are classified into 3 groups according to how they are
formed. These are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Igneous
rocks form when molten rock (magma) originating from deep within the
Earth solidifies. There are two kinds of igneous rocks: intrusive which cools
and solidifies deep beneath the Earth’s surface and extrusive which cools
and solidifies at or near Earth’s surface. Sedimentary rocks are formed from
pre-existing rocks or pieces of once-living organisms. Sedimentary rocks
may be clastic, chemical or biologic. Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have
been substantially changed from their original igneous, sedimentary or
earlier metamorphic form.
C. Reference/s: Introduction to Physical Science (pp. 151- pp. 155)
D. Materials: LCD projector, Laptop, Video clip, cut-outs, pictures, brown envelope,
manila paper, colored paper, cartolina
E. Skills: Defining, Identifying, Illustrating
F. Value: Appreciate the importance of rocks.
III. Learning Activities
A. Routinary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greeting the class
3. Checking the attendance
4. Checking of assignments
B. Developmental Activities
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY
I. Review
Before we start our discussion for today,
let us first have a short review regarding on
our previous lesson.
I have here a shuffled words. All you have
to is to guess that word. There will be clues
written at the bottom of the shuffled word.
Yes Ma’am
Is it clear?
NTUOASIMN
Mountain
( It is a landform that rises prominently above its
surroundings )
ALCOOVN
Volcano
( It is a vent in the surface of the Earth through
which magma, associated gases and ash erupts )
ELHNIIPIPP TULAF OZNE
Philippine Fault Zone
( One of the earthquake generators in the Phil.
Archipelago )
HTRCERI NEGMTDIAU LCSEA
Richter Magnitude Scale
( measures the amplitude of seismic waves on a
logarithmic scale )
UTOMN RETVSEE Mount Everest

II. Lesson Proper
A. Motivation
I have here an activity. You will be divided
into 3 groups. All you have to do is to fix a puzzle
pieces.
Yes Ma’am
Is it clear?
Rocks
Based on the fixed puzzle pieces, what do you think
is our lesson for today?
(Presentation of the objectives)
B. Pre- Activity
I prepared an activity. You will be divided into
3 groups. Each group will receive a basket
containing different rocks. All you have to do is to
identify the kinds of each rocks. Each group must
have a representatives to report your works. Yes Ma’am
Is it clear?
C. Discussion
The Earth’s building materials are the rocks.
Rocks are combination of minerals in varying
proportions. (Students will give their ideas)
Where do you think we could find rocks?
The solid crust of the Earth is rock. The soil
itself is a rock which has been broken down by
weathering.
Rocks are classified into 3 groups according to
how they were formed.
The first one is the igneous rock, which are
formed when molten rock (magma) originating
from deep within the Earth solidifies.
There are 2 kinds of igneous rocks: intrusive
and extrusive igneous rocks. (students will give their ideas)
What do you think is the difference between the
two?
Good! Intrusive igneous rocks are formed from
magma that cools and solidifies deep beneath the
earth’s surface while extrusive igneous rocks are
formed from magma that cools and solidifies at or
near the earth’s surface.
The next one is the sedimentary rock. It is
formed from pre-existing rocks or pieces of once-
living organism.
Under the sedimentary rocks, we have the
clastic, chemical, or biologic.
Clastic are made up of pieces of pre-existing
rocks. Chemical are formed by chemical Metamorphic rocks
precipitation. And Biologic are formed from once-
living organism.
What do you think is the last group of rocks?
Correct! Metamorphic rocks
Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been
substantially changed from their original igneous,
sedimentary, or earlier metamorphic rock.
Rocks are continuously formed from one type
to another. The continuous changes of rocks from
one form to another over a long period of time is
called rock cycle.

Magma Igneous Rock
D. Valuing/ Application
One of the importance of rock is that it tells a
story of the origin and history of the earth. Yes ma’am
So, I want you to collect at least one of each
types of rocks. Attach a paper including
informations about the rocks you gathered. It will
be pass tomorrow
Is it clear?
III. Generalization
For our generalization, you have to complete the
following sentences
I learned that …
I discovered that ….
I realized that … Sedimentary rocks
Do you understand?
Metamorphic rocks
(Have at least 3 students who will complete the
following sentences.)
Igneous rock
IV. Evaluation
Chemical Sedimentary Rock
I. Write the correct answer on the space
provided.
Extrusive Igneous Rock
_________1. It is a rock formed from pre-existing rocks or
pieces of once-living organism.
_________2. The type of rock produced by intense heat or
pressure.
_________3. Type of rock formed when molten rock or
magma originating from within the earth solidifies.
_________4. Sedimentary rock formed by chemical
precipitation
1. ________5. Type of igneous rock that is formed from
magma that cool at or near the earth’s surface
II. Illustrate the Rock cycle
V. Assignment
