BIOGRAPHICAL CHARATERISTICS:
The biographical characters can be age, gender, race and disabilities of
employees or the things that represents surface- level diversity. We can say
that these characteristics are the bedrock for discrimination at workplace
which has serious effects on employee’s outcomes.
AGE: Studies have shown that older employees bring with them years of
experience, tried and true ideas and problem-solving approaches that can be
of great benefit to a business. But in many organisations, older workers are
mis-recognized as counterproductive often.
SEX: Gender discrimination at workplace comes in many forms, but it means
that if an employee is treated differently because of their gender, or because
the person is associated with an organization. For example, when an employer
refuses to hire women, or only hires women for certain jobs
RACE AND ETHICITY: It can be defined as the exclusion of certain people
belonging to certain community who are misconceived through ages by the
society. Workers experience discrimination because of their race or ethnicity.
For instance, a woman of colour may experience discrimination in the
workplace differently from a white female co-worker. She may be harassed,
paid less, evaluated more harshly, or passed over for promotion because of her
race.
DISABILITIES AND HIDDEN DISABILITIES: There many people who has not been
provided with job opportunities because of their physical disability and there
are certain laws to protect the victims who faced this kind of discriminations.
Hidden disabilities will not be obvious to everyone unless he/she discloses
about the illness they are suffering from. In most of cases, people do not want
to disclose their hidden disabilities in order to burgeon in their career.
