Rationale
Online gaming has been a popular leisure activity these days especially during the
pandemic where most teenagers are stuck at their homes bored and doing nothing. Gaming
remains one of the most popular online hobbies among 5-16-year-olds, according to annual
research done by OFCOM, with many of them doing it on their mobile devices and getting
online via their games console. Most gamers are students that should have a limitation in
spending too much in online games since it could affect their lifestyle specially their
academic performances. This idea has been supported by Vinopal, 2018, which children who
play online games all day may perform poorly in school, but the impacts are so minor that it
hardly matters. The study concludes that the detrimental impacts about online gaming may be
exaggerated.
Most related studies that we found about the effects of online gaming addiction are
focusing more on the emotional and mental effects of online games to the users. However,
the focus of this study is about the effects of online game addiction to the academic
performances of Senior high students in Marber National High School to determine the
significance of online gaming and may be able to eventually create a training proposal to help
students or gamers be aware of what they are involved in.
This research aims to determine if there is a significant relationship between the
online game addiction and academic performance of the students. This is also conducted to
help students or gamers be aware of what would be the possible effects of their engagement
in online games and be able to provide a solution to the occurring problem which is the
online gaming addiction.

Statement of the Problem

With the pandemic going on teenagers, specifically students, has faced limitations in
almost everything they do. Most are stuck on their homes and are
not allowed to interact with their friends physically, so they opted to do so through the
internet, through the help of online games. With it they get to know and interact to other
people while having their fun. Due to this exposure to the platform more and more students
are now spending their time playing online and almost neglecting their works and activities in
school. While most gamers would say that online gaming had caused a positive result to their
lives and their selves in general, others specially parents, teachers, and non-gamers beg to
differ.
Since it currently become a huge society issue this study is conducted to know if the
effects of online game addiction are positive and beneficial to the students or if it only serves
as a distraction to them and has caused a negative result on their academic performances.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following:

METHODS

Research Design

The chosen research design to conduct this study is a descriptive research design that
enables the researcher to answer the problem of the study. Descriptive study tries to represent
a population, situation, or phenomenon in a systematic and precise manner. It can answer the
questions of what, where, when, and how, but not why. It can explore one or more variables
using a number of research approaches (McCombes, 2019). Since the goal of this study is to
determine the effects of online game addiction to the academic performance of the Senior
High students in Marber National High School, this design will be use.

Research Participants

The target participants of this study are those who are engaging in online games. They
are the students from Marber National High School who are currently enrolled in the school
year 2021-2022. The researchers will randomly select students from Senior High, Grades 11
and 12.
The sampling method that the researchers will be using in this study is the stratified
random sampling in getting the number of respondents per year level and Slovin’s formula in
getting the target sample size. Stratified random sampling is a sampling strategy that includes
dividing a population into smaller sub-groups called strata. The strata are created based on
shared features or attributes among individuals.
Where:
n = sampling population
N = total population of the Grade 11 and Grade 12 students in Marber NHS

The research instrument of this study is adapted from other related study that has been
revised and added by the researchers. The researchers only include the questions that are
significant to the study that can be of help to answer the problem. It is a researcher-made
instrument that is divided into three parts. Wherein part (1) includes the basic information of
the respondents, containing the students’ age, gender, and year and strand. Part (2) of the
questionnaire contains the academic performance of the student. Meanwhile, part (3) is the
engagement of students in online games. The questions will be answered through a survey
questionnaire. The research instrument chosen is adapted by the researchers from the study
“The Effects of Online Games to Students: Behaviors and Academic Performance” by
Ebarita, J.R, et al., 2019.
