3D Landscape Art Project for Students

The document provides details for a 2-week high school art lesson on creating 3D landscapes. Students will learn about foreground, middle ground, and background by sketching the layers of a landscape separately and then reconstructing it using acrylic paint on paper cutouts layered with cardboard spacers. They will be assessed on a rubric evaluating their use of reference photos, cutting skills, painting quality, accurate depiction of layers, and proper construction of the 3D landscape.

Name Natalie Hyde

Lesson Title 3D Landscape

Grade Level High School

Duration 2 weeks, 45 minute bells

Sample See me for example

Rationale Students will create a dissected landscape. This method will require
the students to distinguish between foreground, middle ground, and
background. They will carefully dissect the landscape and then
precisely reconstruct it.

Central focus Students will learn about different parts of a landscape. In this project
they will focus on foreground, middle ground, and background.
Students will find a reference photo from a magazine. They will then
sketch out the foreground, middle ground, and background in their
sketchbooks. They will draw all three as SEPARATE images. When
they have all three layers sketched out then they will begin to draw
their foreground on acrylic paint paper. They will paint their
foreground, making sure to use the image from the magazine as a
reference. Then the students will cut out their image. They will take
their foreground and lay it on top of a new piece of paper and draw
and paint their middle ground. Students will have to make sure that
their layers line up perfectly. They then cut the middle ground out and
finish with their background. Once they have all of the layers done
they will glue them together with cardboard spacers in between the
layers. This will give the painting depth. Doing this will help distinguish
the difference in layers.
