Instructional Design Report on PBL and CSCW

The document is an individual report submitted by Krisna Saunders in partial fulfillment of an MSc in Instructional Design and Technology. It summarizes Krisna's contributions to three instructional design stints - designing a problem-solving learning environment, a computer-supported collaborative work/learning environment, and a performance support system. For each stint, Krisna describes their original design, what they would do differently, and their proposed enhanced design based on reflection and research. The report reflects on the learning experience and skills gained from participating in the varied instructional design tasks.

STINT 2: PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: PBL

Thoughts, Designs and Justification

After watching a video, each team member had to suggest their small. My small problem

was “ Non-readers in Upper Primary”, and the solution was to create a program that targets

students in the lower primary grade 1 to 3. Next, the group met and chose the problem proposed

by group member Netisha Durand. It was “ Teachers are not up-to-date on new 21st-century

instructional digital tools. The solution was to provide a tool kit. My suggestion was for the tool

kit to be displayed in the form of a blog. Ultimately the group decided to do the kit in the form of

an app.

The interaction that I created was Session 3- Solution: Categories of 21st Tools. I also

worked on the interaction and justification of the submitted document. Below is a screenshot of

my contribution

What I Would do differently

With my increased understanding of PBL and redoing the assignment, I would have

created a more condensed environment and focused on learners solving the problem.

Unfortunately, in PBL, when there are many activities to do before targeting the problem, solving

the problem can get lost (Wells, Warelow, & Jackson, 2009).

Proposed Changes

Many things can be done to solve the problem of “ Teachers not being up-to-date with

21st-century tools. My proposed change to our existing kit focuses on research and group

discussions amongst the teachers. A few models and methods can be used to help the teachers

solve their problems. Using the inquiry-based/discovery learning approach is an excellent choice

for learners in this scenario. Discovery learners include asking - investigate - create - discuss -

reflect. The learner will be asked to research 21st-century digital tools, a list of tools they

discover, discuss with peers and place them in different categories. Below is the screenshot of the

changes

STINT 3 – DESIGNING COMPUTER-SUPPORTED COLLABORATIVE WORK AND

LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Thoughts, Designs and Justification

I was selected as group leader for Stint 3 on CSCW/L Environment. The CSWL tool that

I want to improve is an online whiteboard Fi. I wanted to make a whiteboard to add a raise hand

feature, chat, and poll. Below is the screenshot of my changes to whiteboard fi.
7

The group ultimately chose to improve the CSCW environment of Google Docs, which Simone

Scott-Pryce suggested. The improvement was to add google meet and group chat. My

contribution to this stint was to add navigation links to the prototype. Most of my contribution

was made on Google Docs. I completed the introduction, iterations one and two. Below is the

screenshot of my contribution.
8

What I Would do differently

The prototype needs more integration and functionality by adding links. According to

McElroy (2017), “participants will be more likely to behave realistically as if they were

interacting with a real system, whereas with a sketchy prototype, they may have unclear

expectations about what is supposed to work and what isn’t”. The links will be added to the icon

google meet and google chat to carry them directly to the website instead of showing clipart.

Proposed Changes

I proposed to change google meet to google hangout. Google meet is provided to the users under

GSuite, whereas Hangouts is available to anyone having an email account on Gmail (Sevilla,

2020). This is important because most people can not afford to pay for the complement of

GSuite, so accessing it with a Gmail account is essential. Also, both have the same features:

voice calls, HD video calls, compatibility with multiple computing devices, and built-in screen

sharing. Below is the screenshot of my proposed changes.

STINT 4 - DESIGNING PERFORMANCE SUPPORT SYSTEMS

Thoughts, Designs and Justification

Performance Supported System is a tool that provides just in time assistance to solve. The

proposed case involves the government of Pelican Pride with its virtual HR Management

Information System. The systems see little activity because of the lack of intuitiveness and

navigation instructions. There are four tasks which are completing the application form,

uploading a profile photo, applying for leave and checking in and out a timesheet. My job was

applying for leave. I provide the voice over for applying for leave. The voice-over is easy for the

staff to follow when applying for a leave. Below is the link for my screen recording.

What I Would do differently

The only thing I would do differently for this stint is to add background music to the

recording. According to Savan (2009), “when background music is played during practical

lessons, pupils become better coordinated, and their behaviour improves”.

Proposed Changes

In addition to the videos added to the PSS design, I proposed to add a section for practice

after each task. That section will allow the users to do the job by following the direction before

that is ready to complete the task. Research suggests that practising the lesson beforehand

increases the ability to complete the task when that time comes (Barros, Tani, & Corrêa, 2017).

OVERALL REFLECTION

This course overall was a unique experience compared to other courses. It allowed me to

creativity and to think outside the box like an instructional designer should.

PSLE
This environment was the most challenging out of the three. My group's first attempt at

this task was unsuccessful. It had all of us scratching our heads, figuring out what we missed. It

required me to do additional research and look at the solution differently. Finally, we resubmitted

the assignment and left the resolution up to the learner by just guiding them.

CSCW
This stint was a little easier than the first one. This is since I use CSCW and CSCL

environments in my workplace. As a group, we were able to take one of the popular CSCW

environments, Google Docs and add communication features. By doing this, we made it easier

to work on a document and video chat or chat at the same time. I enjoyed this stint and gained a

new skill using Axure.

PSS

This was the most interesting out of the three. Mainly because I have never heard about

performance solutions. It is so interesting that we can use simple things to help improve a

person's performance. Example adding screen recording or voice over to help guide persons to

complete a task that can increase their productivity.

Overall, I considered this experience to allow me to learn and develop some of the skills

needed in the field of instructional design and technology.
