Reflection Paper

In this class we have covered many topics that I think were highly informative in opening my

perspective on drugs and its effects globally in many diverse cultures and populations. As

someone who is pharmacy technician in Salt Lake City downtown area, West Valley City, and

Holladay, I have a general idea on what prescription drugs are popular in 3 different

communities. Through this class I was able to get an idea on how drugs impact my local

communities as well as a broad global view.

The topics we covered in class that I think I learned the most from were about heroin, opium,

marijuana, tobacco, and alcohol. Through these modules I was able to get more sympathy

towards those who are using these drugs and give myself more benefits of the doubt that they

could also be trying their best to overcome using it, instead of thinking of them as hopeless. I

was able to learn more about the history on how these drugs became so integrated in our current

society as well as an idea on the current and outlook of drug use and production. I was also able

to learn about how to do proper research for the article assignments and learned how to properly

cite them as I had forgotten due to years of not taking an English or writing intensive course.

The impact this class will have on my life would be able to understand more about what

resources are available in my community. Through what I learned, I may or may not be able to

guide others to what resources they can use if they are struggling through a drug addiction such

as the Odyssey House, or the VOA detox program. I also now have more knowledge of what

services they provide and how they guide people struggling with drug use, which could be useful

applying it towards my own life if I struggle with an addiction at some point in my life.

This will affect my future choices because I now have a deeper understanding of how people get

into drugs, and how to navigate myself away from that. Although personally, I have a been

ingrained to not take drugs due to the influence of my parents, and my job also does not permit it

due to drug testing, so although it's very unlikely, it is still an add on to that. This class will also

have a significant impact on how I view patients who do take prescription drugs such as

Oxycodone or Adderall in a way with more understanding.

This course has aspects that dabble in economics, history, sociology, and medicine in some form

or another. Having learned about the cost, production, and distribution of drug and how it shapes

a countries economy is an example. As I am currently taking the course in US Economic

History, the prohibition era was briefly mentioned, and this class gave a bit more depth to it.

I’ve also taken Sociology and biology courses such physiology that take a deeper dive into how

the body functions, and how chemical imbalances can affect the body to function properly. As I

will have to take Pharmacology when I begin my dental hygiene courses, this class also aids in

my future as well.
