1. Two people went into the Post Offce to buy stamps. Adam bought fve
frst-class stamps and ten second-class stamps at a total cost of £3.45.
Beatrice bought ten frst-class stamps and eight second-class stamps at
a total of £4.38.
(a) How much did it cost for one frst-class stamp?
(b) How much did it cost for one second-class stamp?
(c) How much would it cost me for three frst-class stamps
and six second-class stamps?

2. Three Chews and four Bubblies cost 72p. Five Chews and two Bubblies
cost 64p. What would three Chews and four Bubblies cost?

3. A taxi frm charges a fxed cost plus a certain amount per mile.
Someone who is taken 6 miles is charged £3.70. Another person is
charged £5.10 for a journey of 10 miles.

4. Amul and Kim have £10.70 between them. Amul has £3.70 more than
Kim. How much money do each of them have?

5. A chef has the following formula for cooking turkey:


T = a + bW
where T is the cooking time (in minutes), W is the weight of the turkey
(in kg), and a and b are constants. The chef says it takes 4 hours and 30
minutes to cook a 12 kg turkey, and 3 hours and 10 minutes to cook an
8 kg turkey.
(a) Form a pair of simultaneous equations and solve them
(b) How long would it take to cook a 5 kg turkey?

6. Solve the following pairs of linear simultaneous equations:


(a) 2x + y = 9 x – 2y = 7
(b) 3x – 2y = 10 4x + y = 17
(c) x – 2y = 10 2x + 3y = 12

7. Solve the following pairs of nonlinear simultaneous equations:


(a) xy = 2 y=x+1
(b) xy = 4 2y = x + 6
(c) x2 + y2 = 25 x+y=7

8. Solve these two pairs of simultaneous equations


(a) y = x2 + x – 2 y = 5x – 6
(b) y = x2 + 2x – 3 y = 4x – 4
(c) What is the geometrical signifcance of the answers to
parts (a) and (b)?
