2. Alternative methods of birth
The Leboyer Method - is considered a psychological method of delivery that aims at
reducing the trauma during birth and safely introducing the baby to the environment
outside the womb. The approach has major benefits including a gentle, supervised
delivery in a quiet, dim room, an ideal environment for the mother and baby to bond
and avoidance of too much stimulation of the child’s sensorium.
Hydrotherapy and the water birth - Hydrotherapy is immersion in warm water
during labor. It can be used during any part of labor, including early labor and active
labor, as well as the late (“pushing”) phase. Hydrotherapy is offered as a comfort
measure, providing relaxation and pain relief. Hydrotherapy is different from a water
birth. During a water birth, the baby is delivered underwater in a special water birth
tub. Hydrotherapy, on the other hand, is used during labor—but not during the
delivery. However, Women who are good candidates for this delivery method can pair
hydrotherapy and water birth together to create a seamless experience during their
labor and delivery.
Unassisted Birthing – Unassisted birth is often called ‘free birth’. It means deciding
to give birth at home or somewhere else without the help of a healthcare professional
such as a midwife. Unassisted birth does not mean giving birth at home before the
midwife you planned had time to arrive. This is called ‘born before arrival’. You can
have other people with you at an unassisted birth such as members of your family or
a doula.
