Overview
The organization that we chose to work on is
SHAUKAT KHANUM MEMORIAL CANCER HOSPITAL
Origin/History
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center is a cutting-edge Cancer
Center situated in Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar. SKMCH&RC, Lahore was the principal
undertaking of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, which is a beneficent association set up
under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 of Pakistan.
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center (SKMCH&RC) is the brainchild
of Pakistan's World Cup-winning cricket commander, Imran Khan. The fantasy to fabricate an
advanced clinic that gives best in class malignant growth therapy offices and administrations,
independent of the patient's capacity to pay, was to respect the memory of his mom, Shaukat
Khanum, who surrendered to Colon Cancer in 1985 and to help the incalculable disease
patients.
In a non-industrial nation, like Pakistan, there was a shortage of appropriate medical services
offices and malignant growth was the one sickness for which there was a negligible expectation.
Most treatable diseases were analyzed at a high-level stage and at that point, even the costliest
treatment would bring about an antagonistic result. The foundation of SKMCH&RC implied that
Pakistan was accepting its first disease treatment expert office. To dispatch the task, Imran
Khan dispatched a cross-country claim in 1989, trailed by a mission to gather assets through 50
raising money occasions all over the planet. Support for the purpose was overpowering in all
levels of society. In the wake of winning the Cricket World Cup in 1992, Imran Khan's fame took
off, which assisted with raising money endeavors. He had the option to gather £1.5 million only
a month and a half later after the success, a sum that had recently required 2 years to gather. In
1994, when the venture required extra financing, Imran Khan made a trip to 27 urban
communities in Pakistan as a mass contact mission to gather assets for the finish of the task.
2
SKMCH&RC was arranged in three stages, with the first costing almost US$ 22 million; almost
67 percent of the necessary spending plan came as gifts. Thus, SKMCH&RC made its way to
patients on December 29, 1994. The Hospital is situated in Johar Town in Lahore and is based
on a 20-section land site. Dr. Nausherwan Khan Burki, the principal CEO of Shaukat Khanum
Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center, regulated the structure of the Hospital and
enrolled all the counseling and going to clinical staff, the senior nursing, and authoritative staff.
The actual Hospital was planned by Arrasmith, Judd, Rap, Chovan, Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky,
USA. The plan subtleties on the site were dealt with by Messrs and Nayyar Ali Dada Associates
while Progressive Consultants played out the neighborhood design.

Success Stories
Asad:
In 2011, Asad was a four-year-old boy when he developed a fever and started losing weight. He
was then diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of blood cancer.
Everyone suggested we take him to Shaukat khanum hospital Lahore. Asad was admitted and
after undergoing financial evaluation, I was told I would not need to worry about the finances
because the Hospital would ensure that Asad got all the treatment he needed.
I was amazed after seeing SKMCH&RC, because I did not think a hospital of such high standards,
which treated all its poor and deserving cancer patients for free, could exist in a developing
country like ours. Asad’s active treatment lasted for nearly three years and the clinical staff was
always there for us, helping us to stay strong for our son. His mother was constantly by his side
but that meant she had to leave our one-year-old daughter with her sister. This was indeed a
very difficult period for us but we held on to our faith and prayed to God until we ran out of
6
tears. Gradually, we started seeing the positive impact of treatment and eventually, his
strength prevailed against cancer.
Even undergoing weekly chemotherapy could not stop Asad from going to school. The
Hospital’s Schooling Program helped him keep up with his schoolwork. Today, he is in class 4
and doing well. He hopes to join the Pakistan Army when he grows up, and we certainly want
him to follow his dream and to serve the country, just as Shaukat Khanum Hospital has been
serving and saving poor cancer patients for nearly twenty-five years.”
(Narrated by Asad’s father in 2019)
Karzil:
I never imagined that children could get cancer. I thought it was such a horrible disease that
only adults could get it—until my six-year-old daughter, Karzil, was diagnosed with cancer. It
was during the summer vacations, after she had passed the exams for Prep when I noticed a
swelling on Karzil’s right leg. At first, I thought she had hurt herself while playing with her older
brother. However, after a week, the swelling had grown and we took her to a local hospital.
Here, Karzil underwent surgery and the doctors told us she was suffering from cancer. We were
advised to take her to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre
(SKMCH&RC), in Lahore.
Fortunately, at SKMCH&RC, we found out that our daughter had been diagnosed at an early
stage of bone cancer and therefore had a good chance of successfully fighting the disease.
Karzil’s treatment plan included chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and corrective surgery on
her leg, so as to enable her to walk on both her feet. Her treatment started in May, 2016. The
Hospital has a child-friendly environment that greatly helped us in convincing Karzil to attend
regularly for her appointments. Even before Karzil became ill, she wanted to grow up to be a
doctor. The Hospital’s Schooling Programme ensured my daughter stayed in touch with her
books—so that her dream was never interrupted by her illness. I truly admire the way the
Hospital gives patients a reason to smile and enjoy life with the help of various patient-centric
activities.

(Narrated by Karzil’s mother in 2017)
Aoun Haider:
I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer but then my life changed forever on that eventful hot
summer day!
I still remember that blistering hot summer day. I was taking my Grade 8 exams. I was so
focused on my exams that I gave no attention to my nose bleeding the night before. In the
exam hall again, the bleeding occurred. The teacher thought it was because of the hot weather.
But then I started vomiting blood. The teachers got alarmed but I was determined that I had to
complete my paper.
The exams ended and I finally went to see the doctor. The doctor at the local clinic urged my
parents not to delay taking me to Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital. I was upset with the doctor
as I did not want to miss the chance of winning a Writing Competition that had been planned at
school the following day.
At Shaukat Khanum Hospital I came to know I had Leukemia! It was curable but it meant not
being able to go to school and thus not being able to become an aeronautical engineer. If I
could not go to school then I must study on my own I thought and went on to take my
matriculation and intermediate exams through self-study.
Studying was not hard. I had to go through long chemotherapy processes. Instead of sitting
there counting drops, I would study but I did miss school and my friends there. Thus, despite
my lack of immunity and resistance from doctors and my family, I did go back to school for one
unforgettable day only! I used to be a handsome boy but due to the cancer treatment I had lost
my hair, my complexion had darkened and I had gained weight. I cannot forget that day when I
walked into my own school and all the students including my friends laughed at me and
mocked me. I was completely shattered. After that I never returned to school except for when I
had to take my exams as I was focused on my goal of getting good grades and I got them!
8
During my studies for Intermediate exams, I was going through the most strenuous period of
my treatment. Death had never crossed my mind for I wanted to live to be an engineer. In
between treatments I would go home. I would lie there in my bed listening to my cousins and
friends laughing and having a fun time while I could hardly walk.
I have a great life ahead but it would not have been possible without the blessing of Allah, the
unrelenting support of my father who had been my superhero, my mother who never cried in
front of me and my siblings who despite having their life priorities adjusted their lives for me. I
am thankful to them but am extremely thankful to those donors who I have never met but
whose financial generosity enabled my treatment. I will remain indebted to the donors forever
so will the thousands of people like me for without their generous donations, maybe our
dreams of having a normal life would have remained unaccomplished.

Nimra:
“At that tender age, I didn’t know the meaning of cancer. The only thing I remember was going
to Shaukat Khanum Hospital for regular treatment while taking extended leave from school.”
I was the first-born child in our household so the news of blood cancer created havoc in my
entire family. We lived in a rented home in Lahore and expensive cancer treatment seemed
impossible at the time. The thought of losing their precious young child was unbearable and
shocking for my parents. Such acute distress either makes you simply give up or it makes you
fight a lot harder than usual. For my parents, it was fortunately the latter. They went beyond
their limitations to save my life and brought me to Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital & Research
Centre (SKMCH&RC). We were blessed with the welcome news that my treatment would be
completely free of cost.
