In summary, Communication for Social Change is simply the process of imparting or
exchanging vital information through forms like writing, talking and other kinds of
medium, that would completely erupt or alter the norm of any society to cause a
sustainable progression in the society.
To understand how it works, it is very important to first know the concept of Social
Change. Sociologists describe social change as the ‘Shift in human interactions that
transform the existing cultural and social institutions.’ Simply put, is the transition of
a social object from one state to another, any modification in the social organization
of society, its social institutions and social structure.
Unlike popular beliefs, communication for social change is not about casting votes or
enacting new laws, fighting for human rights and freedom or changing politicians and
political parties. Instead, it is a form of dialogue through which people define who
they are, what they want, what they need and how they can act collectively to meet
those needs and improve their lives. It usually addresses societal inequalities,
repression and power inequality.
In terms of relating it to Communication for Development, then development is in a
sense is a mix within the mix of social change. Only a specific type of social change,
geared toward improvement and perfection, is referred to as social development.
However, there are several additional changes that cannot be labeled as
enhancements. For example, the emergence, formation, regress, transitional state, and
so forth.
With that being said, Communication for Social change encourages a society’s drastic
progression through human interactions and relationships with the aim of
transforming cultural and social institutions over time, having a profound impact of
society.
