TARGET GROUP: The minimum requirement for the trainee is to hold a
Certificate of Competency (STCW Regulation II/1 – II/2 – II/3 Deck Officer issued by
any Flag State Administration.

DURATION: 3 Days

Introduction:
Despite having modern equipment on the bridge, accidents still occur. Poor Bridge
Teamwork has often been cited as the main reason for these mishaps.
This Bridge Team Management (BTM) Refresher Training serves to refresh the concept
of a navigation team all deck/navigating officers through a series of exercises,
practical / theory, classroom lectures and interactive computer based training (CBT).
Bridge Team Management techniques will:-
 Emphasise decision making process towards establishing watch conditions
during the course of a voyage.
 Setting up of navigational watches based upon conditions related to workload
and potential threat to vessel.
 Define the individual task and responsibilities of various team members.
 Develop situational awareness to prevent individual errors.

 Highlight issues concerning teamwork, attitude, human relationships, cultural


differences, use of critical information and all available resources.
 Prevent incidents and accidents by improving communication skills and
situational awareness.

AIMS:

Bridge Team Management Refresher Training is to refresh all Deck Officers to Bridge
Team Procedures and teamwork skills with emphasis on Passage Planning and the
Master/Pilot interface.

Also, this course would continue to provide the required motivation and stimulus to
work as a team on the bridge during navigation through open and enclosed/pilotage
waters.

This refresher training will reinforce the Bridge Team Management training
recommended in the IMO Model Course 1.22 and fulfils the training requirement for
navigating officers, as set out in regulation VIII/2, section A-VIII/2 and B-VIII/2 of the
STCW Code 1995.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

On the completion of the course, participants will have gained experience in handling
ships under various conditions and will make a more effective contribution to the
Bridge Team during ship manoeuvring in normal and emergency situations.
The trainees will revisit the following topics covered previously as part of a Bridge
Team Management Course:-
 Familiarization with the use of engines and helm for ship manoeuvring.
 An understanding of the effects on the behaviour of the ship of wind, current,
shallow water, banks and narrow channel and condition of loading.
 A greater awareness of the importance of planning in a passage or manoeuver
and the need for an alternative plan.
 A greater understanding and awareness of efficient bridge procedures and bridge

teamwork during watchkeeping and ship handling in normal and emergency


situations.
 A greater awareness and understanding of good interactive communication style
and benefit of building up a common shared mental model of the planned
passage.

Additionally, the trainees will be able to:-


– Identify the need for teamwork skills and utilize them.
– Organize a functional Bridge Team and appraise situational awareness.
– Respond to challenges of Bridge Team members.
Integrate the Pilot into the Bridge Team and facilitate the Master/pilot
