SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
CIVL2201 STRUCTURAL MECHANICS 2022: ASSIGNMENT 1
This assignment is worth 10 % of the total mark.
Please refer to the Canvas module on “Grading” for expectations and generic grading requirements.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Due Friday 18 March, 23.59 pm (Sydney time) extended to Monday 21 March, 23.59 pm.
Your email to Prof Smith (Q3) must be received by Monday 21 March, 23.59 pm (Sydney time)
It is intended that you attempt the BMDs with hand calculations and a hand drawing (with a ruler) on a
piece of paper, and you submit a scanned version of your pages. If you use a tablet and stylus, you may
submit an "electronically generated hand drawing" converted into Word or PDF.
You can either:
o Scan pages individually and insert as images into Microsoft Word. The scanned images should
be as close to A4 size as possible. You can either submit the Word docx file, or convert to PDF.
o Scan directly into a multipage PDF file.
It is expected that students use hand methods of analysis and drawing in this assignment.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Students are always encouraged to help each other with studying, however copying solutions from
anyone, where you have little or no academic input is not acceptable.
Any form of copying and pasting electronic data for question 3 is not acceptable. The lecturer will have
electronic copies of all submissions, so it will be very easy to detect copying.
Question 1: Consider the overhanging beam below. Please use the table below to determine the appropriate
values for your question. The effects of self-weight are negligible compared to effects of the applied loading.
There is a UDL of magnitude w acting along the entire length L1 of the beam.
There are 2 point loads, each of magnitude P, acting at point B & C. The magnitude of the two point
loads together (ie 2P) is equal to the total force magnitude associated with the UDL.
The distances AB, BC & CD are the same
Draw the bending moment diagram (BMD) and shear force diagram (SFD), clearly indicating the values of V & M
at A, B, C, D, & E. Also show the location(s) and value(s) of maximum sagging and/or hogging moment. Include
your working.

Question 2:
The picture below is a lipped channel section (sometimes called a “lipped-cee”)
The table below will define the dimensions:
Assume the corners are perfect right angles, rather than slightly rounded.
It is made of aluminium with density 2700 kg/m3.
The channel is used as a cantilever. Please use the table below to determine the appropriate values for your
question.
The beam is loaded as follows:
The UDL w equal to 10 times the dead load (self-weight) of the channel. (Use g = 10 m/s2 if necessary)
An additional vertical point load, magnitude P = wL, which acts ¾ along the length of the beam.
Perform the following:
Calculate the value of w.
For the values of w & P calculated above, draw the bending moment diagram (BMD) and shear force
diagram (SFD), clearly indicating the values of V & M at A, B and at the position of P. Also show the
location(s) and value(s) of maximum sagging and/or hogging moment. Include your working.

Question 3: Download the Report Opal Tower Investigation - Final Report from the canvas eLearning site.
Read the entire report.
Identify a portion of the report which in your opinion relates to any issue you have studied in your
degree so far (it does not have to be in Structural Mechanics).
Write a professionally formatted email, (about 200 - 300 words) explaining what you have learned
from reading your preferred portion to a fictional engineering professor, Prof Jonathon Smith. The
email should explain how this issue relates to what you have studied. You must specifically state the
unit of study and the particular issue/theory/case study.
Directly copying from the report is not acceptable – you must write in your own words and specifically
relate the Opal Tower issue to something you have studied so far in your degree.
If you are a repeating student, you are required to write a different summary compared to any
summary you may have submitted previously.
Specific instructions:
Send your email from your University of Sydney email, not a personal gmail etc. account.
Students should send an email to Prof Smith (email address below). Note different email addresses
apply for each group and the plus sign “+” in the address is correct.
The email must be readable as plain text – no bold/italic formatting or attachments.
An appropriate level of “netiquette” is expected in your email to Prof Smith. There is a post in the
“questions” Canvas discussion forum outlining good practice in professional emails.
Prof Smith will send you an acknowledgment receipt by email.
Note that if you send Prof Smith more than one email he will only look at the first one received.
After you have sent the email, include a copy of the email in your electronic canvas
submission.
