WORKSHEET IN MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

GRADE 12
First Quarter
Week 1

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING (MIL11/12)

● Describes how communication is affected by media and information
Learning Objectives:
1. Define media literacy
2. Describe how communication is affected by media
3. Give the significance of media literacy
Learning Inputs:
Media literacy is the ability to  ACCESS, ANALYZE, EVALUATE, CREATE, and ACT  using
all forms of communication which is interdisciplinary by nature. It represents a necessary, inevitable,
and realistic response to the complex, ever-changing electronic environment and communication
cornucopia that surrounds us.

Advantages of Media Literacy

Today’s information and entertainment technologies communicate to us through a
powerful combination of words, images, and sounds. As such, we need to develop a wider set of literacy
skills helping us comprehend the messages we receive and effectively utilize these tools to design and
distribute our own messages. Being literate in a media age requires critical thinking skills that empower us
as we make decisions whenever we are. Finally, while media literacy does raise critical questions about the
impact of media and technology, it is not an anti-media movement. Rather, it represents a coalition of
concerned individuals and organizations, including educators, faith-based groups, health care-providers,
and citizen and consumer groups, who seek a more enlightened way of understanding our media
environment. Source: News and Media Literacy. Common sense media.

DAY 1

Teens Spend 'Astounding' Nine Hours a Day in Front of Screens: Researchers
BY MAGGIE FOX AND ERIKA EDWARDS (Excerpt)
"The fact that tween and teens in the U.S. are using an average of six to nine hours' worth of media
a day is still astounding," the group says in its report. "It shows you that kids spend more time with
media and technology than they do with their parents, time in school, or any other thing." "The sheer
volume of media and technology that American kids spent time with his absolutely mind-boggling,"
James Steyer, CEO and founder of the group, told NBC News. "It shows you that kids spend more time
with media and technology than they do with their parents, time in school, or any other thing. They are
literally living in a 24/7 media and technology world."
"It gets in the way of your ability to concentrate and to synthesize information well." "When you
are constantly on your phone or texting people in an anonymous or very impersonal way, it's a very
different communication and studies show that that can impact intimacy, empathy, and some of the
basic elements of human communication," he added. "There is nothing better than face-to-face
communication for understanding emotions and empathy and really being able to communicate with
people." "Even the old-fashioned telephone is in many cases a lot better than texting or email because
you can feel the emotion in someone's conversation."

Directions: Read the excerpt of an article below and answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.

1. What social media platforms are usually used by teens? Social media platforms like
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat are usually used by
teens.
2. What is the effect of exposure to much social media to the relationship and student life of
the teens? Teens are essentially living their digital lives on social media 24/7. This
enables them to spend more time on their devices which can lead to them losing
connection from people outside their screens. Additionally, this can impact their
academic performance as they invest more time building their social media personas.
Too much exposure to social media may cause them to get detached from reality and
lead them to ignore their priorities.
3. Compare and contrast virtual communication to face to face communication. Virtual and
face to face communication both have their advantages to it. Virtual communication
allows us to be able to keep up our connections despite distance and other hindrances.
However, face to face communication proves to be better as people are able to
communicate far more clearly compared to virtual communication. In face to face
communication, emotions are understood, empathy is present, and there is more
intimacy between people. These are elements that are not as present in virtual
communication.

DAY 2 - 3
Learning Opportunity
Directions: Write a 150-word essay about your views on the temporary closure of ABS- CBN
station. How does this affect the delivery of communication and media options? Write your

When ABS-CBN was suddenly shut down last 2020, the country faced sudden changes in the
way they gather news and consume other media— not to mention that it was even done amidst the
pandemic where information and other data of public interest are deemed crucial.

As the country’s top network, many have lost access to information and media options when
ABS-CBN made its exit in television. That being said, there became a scarcity of critical
information that is provided to the people. This led to many being unaware of current events in
our country, having no network that serves as their source of information on a daily basis.

Many of the struggles the public came through with the absence of ABS-CBN are rooted to the
idea that the network was their main source of information, communication, and media options.
As the people began to voice out their concerns over the absence of the network, ABS-CBN
slowly started bringing back their shows through different media channels and social media
platforms which allowed them to continue their service to the public. This move by the network
was deeply appreciated by its supporters as their main source of media coverage has chosen to
continue its service despite its shutdown. Essentially, ABS-CBN proves to be the country's most
popular network and media station.
