1. Indigenous media is technology used for the exchange of information among people, communication
that may take place within family members, communities, and in the marketplace.
2. Indigenous Information refers to the understandings, skills and philosophies developed by societies
with long histories of interaction with their natural surroundings.

What I can Do Topic: ““How do I choose from the wide variety of information made available by different
sources?”
Because of the wide variety of information available today, it is important to determine your personal
standards on the information you desire, so that you will know where and what to look for. Setting your
personal standards on the information you need will help you narrow down your ideas and your area of
locating your specific information, and this will result to the information that will satisfy you or your needs.

Lesson 8: Legal and Ethical Issues in Media & Information

Activity 8.1: Case Study 1. First Article: “UP student plagiarizes prize-winning photos.”
* Solis sent his plagiarized photos to a photo competition called “Smiles for the World.”

* The organizing committee ripped Solis of his prizes, the $1000 prize money and the round trip tickets to Chile
and Brazil.

* Technology is a tool, it’s meant to make human lives easier. Technology boosts a person’s limitless creativity
and imagination, take visual arts for example. This is also true to a person with intent of plagiarizing
someone else’s work, which you can easily do with today’s technology. In conclusion, yes, technology does
make plagiarism easier and tempting, but it also help us make beautiful new things of our own, using
available tools that expand our capacity to imagine things we’ve never thought of creating before. At the
end of the day, it’s all about how a person will use our current technology that will define him as a creator.

2. Second Article: “UP grad in photo plagiarism gets redemption.”

* Mark Joseph Solis managed a football program for street children at a makeshift field inside the Baclaran
church compound in Pasay City.

* Calidad Humana Project

* I’ve learned that life is full of ups and downs, and that a mistake can be redeemed. Just because you made a
mistake it doesn’t mean it’s who you are or it’s what defines you. Also, accepting the fact that you’ve made
a mistake and what you did is indeed wrong, is a character development. Acknowledging one’s mistakes in
life means he’s ready to correct them.

Activity 8.2: Sticky situations

1. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY A situation where I can use my knowledge on
intellectual property is when thinking of a research
topic and product for a group project.
2. COPYRIGHT Sharing a leaked or pirated movie through
messenger, or posting it on a public online platform
is something a person shouldn’t do since it’s
infringement.
3. FAIR USE GUIDELINES A good situation for this is when doing the RRL and
RRS of our research project, in-text citations and a
reference list is a must.

Activity 8.3: Question and Answer

1. There is this one time back in 2015 when one of my subject teachers asked for an output with very
specific instructions. We we’re instructed to put our outputs in a short bond paper, a specific margin, font and
font size. At that time I had no idea how to do it because I had no experience with computers, the internet,
and other things related. On top of all that, I had a very low self esteem which made it hard for me to ask for
help. In the end, I submitted a hand written output, and I submitted it late because I was shy.
2. The situation above belong to the group called “ the digitally rich and the digitally poor” because at
that time, we had no internet, computer and even a smartphone due to financial reasons.
3. A free course all about ICT with all equipments provided for all of the people eager to learn but have no
opportunity.

Activity 8 4: Self-Test
1. I got 5 out of 5 from the given signs and symptoms of having an internet addiction.
2. Look for an alternative recreational activity that involves me socializing with other people, but under the
condition that I genuinely find it fun and exciting.

avatar of another internet addict. It’s very addicting.

Activity 8 5: Effects of Cyber Bullying

1. Cyber Bullying can cause anxiety and one of the negative effects that anxiety brings to person’s health
is that it’s hard to fall a sleep and we all know that less sleep can cause serious illnesses.
2. Cyber Bullying can cause depression, a mental illness same as anxiety that if left untreated, it lead to
other serious illnesses. If the mind is ill, then the body is ill.
