Estimating Concrete Hollow Block (CHB) Quantity
• Concrete Hollow Blocks are
used for a variety of
purposes and are classified
as load-bearing and non-
load bearing blocks. Local
hardware stores usually
have a variety of 3
commercially-available CHBs
– 4”, 6”, 8”.
Mortar
• Cement mortar is a well-known
partner of concrete hollow
blocks (CHB) and other masonry
blocks. It's what binds masonry
blocks together. Cement mortar
material quantity can be
estimated in a variety of
methods.
Plastering
• Plastering is the process of covering rough
walls and uneven surfaces in the
construction of houses and other
structures with a plastic material, called
plaster, which is a mixture of lime or
cement concrete and sand along with the
required quantity of water.
HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CHB FOR YOUR
CONCRETE WALL:
• The easiest way to estimate CHB quantity is by the Area
Method. A piece of standard concrete hollow block (CHB)
has a surface area of 0.08 m2. In accordance to this, a
one square meter area will require 12.5 pcs of CHB.
1m2 / 0.08m2 = 12.5 pcs of CHB
HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CHB FOR YOUR
CONCRETE WALL:
1. Determine the wall area: Aw = W x H
2. Determine door and window total area: AD = W x H
3. Get your total wall area: AT = Aw - AD
4. Multiply your total wall area by 12.5, the number of pieces
needed for a 1m2 wall:
N = AT *(12.5pcs./m2)
Estimating Cement and Sand Quantity
for Mortar Mix
Cement mortar is a well-known partner of concrete hollow
blocks (CHB) and other masonry blocks. It's what binds
masonry blocks together. Cement mortar material quantity
can be estimated in a variety of methods. One of the easiest
ways to estimate cement mortar material quantity is by area
method.
1.Determine your mortar mixture:
HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CEMENT AND
SAND FOR YOUR MORTAR MIX:
1. Determine the CHB thickness used for your wall:
Concrete hollow blocks (CHB) vary in sizes. Local hardware stores
usually have 3 commercially-available CHBs that vary in thickness
– 4”(10cm), 6”(15cm) and 8”(20cm).
4”(10cm) thick CHBs are usually used for interior walls while
6”(15cm) and 8”(20cm) thick CHBs are usually used for exterior
walls.
HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CEMENT AND
SAND FOR YOUR MORTAR MIX:
Class A = High-strength mortar recommended for below-grade applications such as
for foundations and retaining walls.
Class B = Medium-strength mortar recommended for below-grade applications
such as for exterior walls, shallow retaining walls and outdoor patio paving stones.
Class C = Medium-strength mortar recommended for general purpose projects such
as for load-bearing exterior and interior walls.
Class D = Low-strength mortar recommended for non-load bearing projects.
HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CEMENT AND
SAND FOR YOUR MORTAR MIX:
3. Determine the wall area:
• Determine the area of your wall. The formula for a square wall
is Length * Height.
• Square Wall Area = Length * Height
• Make sure to take into consideration the often-overlooked
information that will affect the area of your wall – for example,
the depth of your beam or the underground foundation CHB.
HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CEMENT AND
SAND FOR YOUR MORTAR MIX:
4. Based on the specified kind of mixture and CHB thickness
and size, multiply your area with the corresponding values from
the mortar proportion table:
Plastering Calculations
1. Required Plastering Area
2. Plastering mixture ratio/thickness
3. Add 10% - 20% wastage

SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
Compute for the quantity of CHB, cement and sand needed for a
Class “B” mortar mix and plastering (t = 16mm- one face) of a
standard 4” CHB wall that is 3 meters high and 2 meters long.
Seatwork 2P 1/29/22
Compute for the quantity of 8” concrete hollow
blocks (CHB), Cement and sand (Mortar Class C
and plastering Class C with t = 20mm with 2 faces)
needed for a wall that is 3 meters high and 5
meters long with a door opening of is 2.1 meter
high and 0.6 meter wide and a window that is 0.6
meter wide and 1 meter high.
Assignment 2P:
• Referring to the figure, estimate the CHB requires for
walls 1, 2 and 3 based on these data:
• a. length of wall 1 = 4.0 m, using 150mm thick x 200mm x 400mm CHB
size of door = 90cm x 210cm
• b. length of wall 2 = 5.0, using 150mm thick x 200mm x 400mm CHB
– Size of window = 150cm x 225cm
• c. length of wall 3 = 4.0m, using 100mm thick x 200mm x 400mm CHB
• The vertical distances that comprise the total length
height of the CHB walls are as follows:
• Height of A = 2.80m
• Height of B = 0.30m
• Height of C = 0.30m
• Total Ht = 3.40m
Estimate also the quantity of cement and sand required for
the mortar using class A mixture.
