A
book titled “The Utterly Butterly Milkman”, compiled
by Nirmala Kurien, daughter of Dr. Verghese Kurien,
was released during the National Milk Day celebrations
on November 26th, 2021. “The book intends to commemorate
Dr. Verghese Kurien’s birth centenary with a compilation of all
that his life stood for.”

Ms. Nirmala Kurien remembered the life of Dr. Kurien from

the early days when he landed for the first time in Anand
on May 13, 1949, and thereafter, his associations with Mr.
Tribhuvanbhai Patel, chairman of Amul, and H. N. Dalaya, his
college mate from Michigan State University, joined him and
many anecdotes of his life.

Nirmala Kurien mentioned that in 1964, Prime Minister Lal

Bahadur Shastri’s village visit in Gujarat changed her Dada’s
(as she fondly called him) focus from one state to replicating
the so-called Anand Pattern across India. He believed in
an inclusive economy—one that did not favour any one
community or gender but where all men and women could
aspire to be equal—and one that would give them all a fair
chance to build an India that had greater opportunity for more
broadly shared prosperity, especially for those facing the
greatest barriers to advancing their well-being. Author: Ms. Nirmala Kurien
