The sovereign God crafted the human from the dust of the [earth]
and breathed into its nostrils the breath of life, and the human became a living soul.
-Genesis 2:7, trans. Rev. Dr. Wilda Gafney
The season of Lent is upon us. This period of 6 ½ weeks leading up to Easter is set aside
as a time for reflection, prayer, and reevaluation of our lives. Traditional iterations of
Lent often emphasize restraint, confession, and piety. The origins of Lent were that one was to leave
their old life behind to fast and prepare to be baptized into a new way of living. In essence, this was a
practice of stepping away from the rat race, corrupt power, scarcity mentality, and empty rituals in order
to live a more expansive and full life of faith.
The Revised Common Lectionary scriptures for this Lenten season are filled with parables and promises
of God’s abundant and expansive grace: Jesus as a mother hen, a prodigal son welcomed home, a fig tree
nurtured with care and hope, precious oil poured out lovingly and freely, and stones shouting out with
praise. These sacred texts are brimming with a gospel of grace, a grace we’ve done nothing to deserve or
earn, and yet, like water, it spills over.
This Lent we are once again partnering with A Sanctified Art to celebrate this grace with our Lenten
theme “Full to the Brim.” It is an invitation into a radically different Lent, into a full life; it’s an invitation
to be authentically who you are, to counter scarcity and injustice at every turn, and to pour out even
more grace wherever it is needed. When we allow ourselves to be filled to the brim with God’s lavish
love, that love spills over. It reaches beyond ourselves; like water, it rushes and flows, touching
everything in its path.
“Full to the Brim” doesn’t ignore or deny sin and suffering or absolve accountability for wrongdoing.
Instead it contextualizes our faith. If love is our beginning, how can we live our lives led by love’s
promises? It reminds us to live fully as we pursue justice and hope, or express grief and gratitude.
In addition to our regular Sunday morning worship services, you are invited to some special, joint
worship services with other Presbyterian Churches in the area to enhance your Lent:
Ash Wednesday: March 2, 7:00 pm, @ Hill Church in-person and online. This service includes scripture,
poetry, prayer stations, and an optional imposition of ashes.
Maundy Thursday: April 14, 7:00 pm, @ Hill Church in-person and online. This service will include special
music and the Lord’s Supper.
Good Friday: April 15, 12:00 pm @ St. Andrews Church or broadcast live on WBUT 1050 AM. This service
includes special music and meditations on the Passion of Christ.
This Lent, let us trust – fully – that we belong to God. Let us increase our capacity to receive and give
grace. Let us discover the expansive life God dreams for us.
Peace-
Pastor Leigh

Dear Friends,
Once again I want to thank you for all the kindness shown to Mom over these many years. As I've said many
times, she loved the church; the building, staff, traditions and most of all the members she came to know and love in her almost ninety
years of membership at Hill. On the many walks we took up and down the alley she always would remark about what wonder-
ful people belonged at Hill. I feel the same way!
I especially want to thank you for the cards and notes to Mom when she was unable to come to church and for the time
she was at Concordia. I read them to her many times and it helped both of us. We plan to have a memorial service and cele-
bration of Mom's life near the end of June. A date and time will be announced in March.
With love,
5 Marsh Miller
