Block Dhanipur, Aligarh,U.P
M/s ION Exchange (I) Ltd.
1. INTRODUCTION :
1.1 We were asked to take the work of Sub Soil exploration for Proposed ESR at village
Jalalpur Sehore Block Dhanipur for District Aligarh Rural Water Supply Scheme, U.P.
1.2 Sub-soil exploration was undertaken at the above site to study the geotechnical properties
of various soil strata at the site, collect appropriate samples, conduct required field and
laboratory tests and submit detailed report recommending a suitable foundation system for
the proposed construction. Bearing capacity of soil is to be recommended wherever
necessary.
1.3 The sub soil exploration comprised of making one bore hole of 10.00m/ Refusal at the
location of at the location of ESR, for soil bearing capacity calculations. The field
exploration was done in the last week of August, 2021. The locations of bore holes were
marked by the site Engineer as shown in Plate no. 1.
2. GENERAL LOCATION AND TOPOGRAPHY OF THE EXPLORED SITES:
Aligarh falls under Zone IV of Seismic map as per IS: 1893 (Part-I) -2016.
Recent major earthquake near Aligarh were:
a) Uttar Kashi in Uttranchal in year 1991 ( Magnitude 6.60)
b) Chamoli in Uttranchal in year 1999 (Magnitude 6.80)
2.1 The explored site is situated about 400m from Panethi Gokulpur Road in an open area near
the existing cremation ground in village Jalalpur Sehore, Dhanipur, Aligarh. The site is
uneven in nature and is about 30cm below the road level. A water logged depression also
exists near the explored area. (Refer Plate no. 1 for field investigation plan).
3. FIELD WORK:
3.1 Bore Holes:
Bore holes of 15 cm nominal diameter were made by machine following the procedure
described in article 3.4 of IS 1892 - 1979.
Visual observations were also recorded while making the boreholes.
3.2 Sample collection:
A. Disturbed Samples:
Disturbed samples were collected at various levels of boring wherever felt necessary.
B. Undisturbed Samples:
IS 2132 sets the design criteria for drive samplers which are used to collect the undisturbed
samples from the borehole at predetermined regular interval not exceeding 150 cm. or
change of soil strata whichever is earlier.
The sampling tubes, after collection of undisturbed samples are waxed, sealed and labelled
at site and carefully brought to the laboratory for necessary testing of the soil samples.

3.3 Standard Penetration Test :
IS 2131 details the Standard penetration Test procedure which is adopted in the field.
A standard split spoon sampler is driven into the soil with a 63.5 Kg. monkey free falling
for 75 Cm. and number of blow counted forever 15 Cm penetration. The sum of number of
blows for last two 15Cm penetration is treated as SPT value or 'N' values. 'N' values so
obtained are also subject to correction for overburden and dilatancy as detailed in article 3.5
or IS 2131.
'N' values obtained in the field and corrected, if any, are shown in the bore log appended as
Plate no. 3.
3.4 Water Table :
The depth at which the water table stablized in the borehole is measured. At least 24 hrs.
time is allowed for the water table to stabilize.
4. LABORATORY TESTS :
The laboratory testing has been carried out in our NABL accredited laboratory. The quality
procedures in our laboratory conform to ISO/IEC-17025:2017.
Laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples to determine their physical and
engineering properties. The testing procedures were in accordance with current applicable

5. GENERAL NATURE OF THE SOIL STRATA:
The bore log for the bore hole appended as Plate no. 3indicates the general nature of soil, IS
classifications, water table and observed „N‟ values at a glance.
The following distinctive strata are indicated:
(i) Plastic soil (“CL” group of IS classification) up to about 3.00m depth.
(ii) Non Plastic soil (“SM” and “ML” group of IS classification) up to the termination
of boring.
6. WATER TABLE:
The depth at which the water table stabilized in the borehole is measured. At least 24 hrs
times is allowed for the water table to stabilize.
The water table has been met at 5.80m depth during the period of exploration.
(Refer Plate No.3).
7. INTERPRETATION OF THE TEST RESULTS:
The choice of the type of foundation depends upon the safe bearing capacity design and
layout of super structure, relative economics of various alternatives and practical
consideration. In case of R.C.C. foundation the safe bearing capacity/allowable bearing
pressure, calculation is governed by IS: 6403 - 1981 for shear consideration and IS: 1904 -
1986 & IS:8009 (Pt. - I) 1976 for consideration of settlement.
8. COMPUTATION FORMULAE:
In case of shallow or raft foundation, the bearing capacity computations shall be governed
by IS 6403-1981 for shear considerations and allowable bearing pressure computations
shall be governed by IS 8009 (Part - I) 1976 and IS 1904 - 1986 for settlement
considerations.

M/s ION Exchange (I) Ltd.
8.1 Safe Bearing Capacity on Shear considerations:
In accordance with IS 6403 - 1981, the net share bearing capacity on shear consideration is
computed by general formulae,
qs = 1/F [ C Nc + Q (Nq - 1) + 0.5B NW’ x 0.1]
where,
qs = Net safe Bearing Capacity in Kg/cm2.
F = Factor of Safety. =2.50
C = Cohesion in Kg/cm2.
q = Effective surcharge in Kg/cm2.
B = Width of Footing in metre.
W‟ = Correction factor for water table.
r = Unit weight of soil below the foundation in gm/cc.
Nc' Nq' Nr = Bearing Capacity Factors depending on void ratio or „N‟ value and
angle of internal friction as read from IS 6403-1981, Table 1.
Depth and inclination factors considered = 1
For plastic strata general shear failure conditions are used where N > 12, for calculating N ‟,
C
Nq'and Nr.
8.2 Allowable Bearing Pressure on Settlement Considerations:
The allowable bearing pressure is also to be so restricted that the anticipated settlements do
not exceed the permissible settlement as specified in IS 1904-1986 for the proposed
structure and the soil classification.
8.2.1 Settlement of Plastic soil layers : (Normally consolidated)
As per IS 8009 (part-I)-1976, the settlement of plastic soil strata is calculated using the
expression as under:
Ht Cc P0 + P
S= ——————— Log 10 ———————
1 + e0 P
where,
S = Settlement in cm.
Ht = Thickness of plastic layer in cm.
Cc = Compression Index.
e0 = Void ratio at pressure P0.
P0 = Original pressure at mid depth of plastic layer.
P = Change in pressure at mid depth of plastic layer.
Project No. 2021323 Page 5

Block Dhanipur, Aligarh,U.P
M/s ION Exchange (I) Ltd.
8.2.2 Settlement of Plastic soil layers: (Over consolidated)
For hard clayey silt encountered below the founding level, consolidation settlement is not likely to
occur. The immediate settlement has been computed using the following equation
qB’ (1- 2 )
Si =------------------- Idfdr
E
Reference: Foundation Analysis & Design by J.E. Bowles fifth edition (1996)
where:
Si = Immediate (elastic) settlement
B = Foundation width, B’ = B/2
= Poisson‟s ratio
q = Applied bearing pressure
E = Modulus of elasticity
df = Depth factor
dr = Rigidity factor
I = Influence factor at corner of rectangular loaded area (B‟ x L‟)
The value of modulus of elasticity E has been adopted from the following fig. 1 based
on Index properties and SPT values as published by Stroud
where,
mv = Coefficient of volume compressibility Cm2/Kg
= 1/F2N as published by Stroud and represented in fig. 1
N = Field SPT value
Project No. 2021323 Page 6
Geotechnical Investigation for Proposed ESR at Jalalpur Sehore
Block Dhanipur, Aligarh,U.P
M/s ION Exchange (I) Ltd.
8.2.3 Settlement on Non-Plastic soil.
As per article 9.14 of IS 8009 (part-I)-1976, the settlement of non plastic soil layers are
read from Fig.9 of the above code for „N‟ value for unit chance in pressure. This „read‟
settlement is then corrected for actual change in pressure and actual thickness of non-plastic
soil strata.
8.2.4 The total settlement computed above for plastic and non-plastic soil strata is then corrected
for rigidity effect as per article 9.5 of IS 8009 (part-I) 1976.

10.6 The chemical analysis test result reveals that the harmful salts are within permissible
limits.
10.7 After excavation, the bottom of the excavation shall be cleared of all loose soil and shall be
leveled, where necessary. The bed shall be wetted and compacted by heavy rammers to an
even surface.
10.8 During Construction, where sufficient space is available for temporary/permanent
excavations, slopes shall be made at 1.5(H): 1(V). Where sufficient space is not available
for sloped excavations, shoring may be used. Vehicular traffic meant for haulage shall not
be allowed near the top of slope within a horizontal distance equal to depth of temporary
excavations.
10.9 The refilling of the excavation shall be done with care so as not to disturb the constructed
foundation, and shall be compacted in layers not exceeding 15cm thick with sprinkling of
minimum quantity of water necessary for proper compaction. It is suggested that fills and
back fills compacted to at least 95% of maximum Dry density value achieved in the
laboratory test.
