0) INTRODUCTION

To guarantee the performance required from hydraulic components (dependable

operation, low wear, tight sealing, etc.) a number of steps must be taken that include
limiting the presence of contamination. The increasingly high expectations of
customers and the ever greater sophistication of hydraulic systems require that
contaminants be minimised.

1) PURPOSE
The purpose of this specification is to define acceptable levels of contamination for
individual parts, test rigs, and the hydraulic components that are the finished products
of Ognibene S.p.A. (such as power steering units and hydraulic cylinders). Another
purpose is to provide a short description of the methods to be used when checking for
contaminants in such components.

3) MEASUREMENT METHODS

3.1) To classify the level of contamination in the hydraulic fluids used at test rig, the
coding method described in the ISO 4406 standard must be used. This method is
based on the number of particles (classified by size) that are present in a unit volume
of fluid. The particles must be counted with calibrated instruments as described in the
ISO 4402 standard.

3.2) To measure the level of contamination in parts and finished components, the
gravimetric method described in the ISO 4405 standard must be used. This method
involves collecting the contaminants from the surfaces in contact with the hydraulic
fluid through careful rinsing with solvent, which is subsequently filtered and weighed.
Filter membranes with a pore diameter of 5 µm are used to carry out this test.

4) ACCEPTABLE LEVELS OF CONTAMINATION

4.1) Cleanliness of hydraulic systems on test rigs.

4.1.1) The level of contamination of the fluid in hydraulic systems on test rigs for
finished components must not exceed 16/13, as defined in the ISO 4406 standard.

4.1.2) The water content in the hydraulic system must not exceed 0.10%, as
determined using the distillation method described in the ISO 3733 standard.

4.1.3) The fluid to be analysed must be withdrawn as close as possible to the intake
point of the component being tested and with the test rig operating under normal
conditions.

4.1.4) Each test rig must be checked often enough to assure that the maximum level of
contamination is not exceeded.

4.1.5) If the rig or the component being tested is involved in a mechanical accident,
conformity with the standard must be re-established before additional components are
tested.

4.2) Cleanliness of individual parts and finished components.

4.2.1) The cleanliness of finished components is assured by guaranteeing the

cleanliness of the parts making up such components and by checking the components
at established intervals.

4.2.2) Surfaces in individual parts and finished components that contact hydraulic fluid
must have a level of contamination that meets the following specifications:

a) Size of abrasive particles: (metals, silicates, enamel, etc.) ≤ 500 µm

b) No. of abrasive particles, with size: ≥100µ

µm ≤ 430 /m²

c) Total weight of contaminants: ≤ 300 mg/m²

d) Burrs left after machining, which may then detach, are not acceptable.

4.2.3) The contaminant is collected for measurement by carefully washing all surfaces
in contact with the hydraulic fluid. Washing is performed with a low-viscosity oil-
based solvent which has been filtered with a 0.8µm membrane (or ISO 12/9 grade).

4.2.4) If parts with extremely small surfaces must be checked, enough parts must be
washed so that the total surface area cleaned by the solvent is at least 200 square
centimetres.

4.2.5) In lieu of and/or in addition to the gravimetric test, the level of contamination
can be measured by counting particles classified by size and relative classification, in
accordance with the UNI-ISO 4406 standard, as follows:

- Completely fill the component (cylinder, power steering unit) with a quantity of
clean fluid (maximum contamination level: ISO 14/11) that is equal to the volume
of the component (each side of double-acting cylinders must be filled with half the
total volume of the cylinder).

- Shake and strike the component so that the contaminant on its internal walls is
evenly distributed in the fluid.

- Withdraw from the component a quantity of fluid that is sufficient for counting the
particles and classifying the contamination as per the ISO 4406 standard.

- The contamination level detected must not exceed ISO 17/14.

- If more fluid than the internal volume of the component is required for removing
contamination, the particle count must be adjusted to express particles per actual
volume of the component.

4.2.6) All components and individual parts that have already been cleaned must be
packaged in such a way that no contamination from external sources occurs during
warehousing and transport.

4.2.7) If components are repaired or remachined, they are to be washed again before
being reinstalled.

5) INDICATION ON DRAWINGS

The drawings for parts and finished components whose level of contamination has to
be limited must require conformance with this standard (for example, “Cleanliness per
OBS 510 specification”).
