QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
1. What are the three elements in contemporary art?
The three elements in contemporary art are the following:
- Subject Matter
- Materials
- And, art elements and principles.
2. Define each element by citing the scope of each one.
Subject matter – The subject matter depicts what is illustrated or it is usually what you can see
in an artwork.
Material – From the word itself, it is the materials used in the artwork or what the artwork is
made of.
Art and elements - It refers to the image's physical characteristics. Color, lines, space, and other
elements are used by the artist to produce artistic images that are organized in a way that
observes unity, harmony, rhythm, or other design concepts in a clever manner.
3. Do you think brass is the best material for Cacnio’s sculpture? Explain your answer.
Yes, I believe so, because aside from his knowledge of the material, I believe brass is an
excellent choice for sculptures because it ages beautifully.
APPLICATION OF MAJOR CONCEPTS
1. Art form is achieved in the sculpture by stone or wood carving, bronze casting, and clay firing
forming it into a three-dimensional form.
2. The sculpture appears light despite the brass material because it is usually seen as color
yellow and you can see it as a very light color that’s why brass is used mainly for decoration
purposes. Sculptures are usually used or created to become a decoration.
3. It can be said that the artist has achieved mastery of use of the material because it can be
seen in their artworks in small and large details. You can see that they made it smoothly and
precisely.
INDEPENDENT WORK
The Subject Matter:
I think the main figure in the artwork is the life under the sea or ocean. All of the other figures
in the painting also depict life at sea. From a diver's view, each figure in the painting blends to
form a beauty and peaceful look. Also, if you will look at the picture or artwork, you can see
that is aesthetically pleasing and I think you can feel at peace and I think it is really what the
creatures feel.
The Materials
Pacita Abad, the artist behind the piece, is known to be skilled in a variety of mediums,
including acrylic paints, mirrors, buttons, and sequins. Looking at the various sections of the
work, one can quickly conclude that she is literate in the use of such mediums in creating her
own kind of art. The materials used carry out the proper shin that the artist hoped to achieve. I
believe that if she uses new mediums to create her work, it would never be the same as it was
before. Since she didn’t use her mastery, it can be not as beautiful as the original one. I believe
that mastery of the material used is very essential in an artwork.

Colors, spaces, lines, and textures are the work's distinguishing elements. The vivid life beneath
the sea is highlighted by these elements. Clear, non-monochromatic colors are used to make
the figures appear as realistic as possible. It also aids in bringing the artwork to life and setting
the tone. Lines are used to set borders, make shapes, and shape different intentions, while
spaces between each figure are used to indicate contrast and emphasis. It also serves as a guide
for how the creatures will appear, as well as a means of demonstrating realism through art
techniques such as shading and darkening of certain areas. The context ocean may be the
unifying element, explaining how various species can live as one. Overall, the artwork is visually
pleasing given the strong color selection and combination, as well as tactilely appealing due to
the visible texture.
