Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Class Attendance is considered to be one of the most important factors in gaining
knowledge at school besides being an attentive listener and an active, studious class participant.
These three factors should go hand-in-hand. But, it seems that Class Attendance had been taken
for granted by most students thinking that it doesn’t make a big impact on their performance and
doesn’t contribute much to the results of their grades. Hence, making them skip classes whenever
they want to.
Cutting classes had been one of the major problems that ever arise in the world of Education.
And, students in Maranatha Christian Academy of Caloocan are not exempted to that dilemma
Cutting classes may seem to be harmless to some students; but it is, in fact, the most harmful
habit that we could ever have as students. This chapter includes the background of the study,
rationale, objectives of the study, scope and delimitation, significance of the study, as well as, the
theoretical/conceptual framework of the study.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Like any other schools, Maranatha Christian Academy (MCA) of Caloocan, Inc., has its
own history. Maranatha Christian Academy (MCA) was found in 1880. It is a private institution
that cultivates Christian values and give high importance in reading the Bible to guide and help
mold its students in a more holy and fruitful Christian living. Because of this pursuit, MCA
expanded.
2
Hence, the birth of its different branches which includes the Maranatha Christian
Academy of Caloocan, Inc. MCA does not merely offers excellence in the personal knowledge
of God and towards fruitful Christian living, but also focus on giving academic excellence to its
students. Though the school’s mission and vision are excellent and promising to the welfare of
its students, that excellence still depends on how students work on achieving it.
Education plays a big role in a man’s life, so they say. Sometimes, it can determine the
future of the students. Sometimes, academic excellence and future success comes in pure luck;
but, most of the time, it comes through good education and how well you persevere and work
hard in attaining that so-called “Excellence” and Success”.
According to the Department of Education (DepEd) (2009), cutting classes had become
a serious problem. In fact, it had become rampant throughout the past years until now. And,
Maranatha Christian Academy of Caloocan, Inc. has its share of cutting classes problems.
Students mostly skip classes. And, yes, we’ll focus more specifically on Grade10 students of
MCA of Caloocan, Inc. We have observed that some Grade 10 students of MCA of Caloocan,
Inc., waste their opportunity to learn by doing “Cutting Classes” during school hours. Doing this
bad habitual form of negligence and laziness not only waste opportunity to learn in the part of
the students; but also, a waste of money and effort in the part of parents with dreams of giving
their children good education. But through proper communication and through counselling and
proper knowledge of the cause and effect of the said problem, then students who skip classes can
be reduced or may even be eliminated. The proponents selected this study on “The Effects of
Cutting Classes in Academic Performance of Grade-10 Students” of Maranatha Christian
3
Academy of Caloocan Inc. to help those Grade-10 students who skip classes determine the
effects of cutting classes in their academic performances. Thus making them know and
understand that they are inflicting harm to themselves by doing such thing and help them correct
their ways. Moreover, it is very important to take into consideration that parents must be aware
of their children’s cutting classes’ problem in order for them to help their children, too.
Statement of the Problem
Determining the Effects of Cutting Classes in Academic Performance of Grade-10
students of Maranatha Christian Academy of Caloocan, Inc. will eventually help students do
some self-evaluation and also help parents and teachers in identifying the cause of the problem
and come up with effective solutions to help those students who do “cutting classes” correct their
ways and value education more by always attending classes. There is a need to continue to raise
awareness among Grade-10 students about the bad effects of cutting classes in their academic
performances and promotes the need of family counselling inside their homes, as well as, the
need of counselling within the school premises to effectively enlighten those students about the
necessity of always being present in every classes and for them to feel genuine love.
Cutting Classes was never a good thing to do. It really affects your academic
performance, because cutting classes also means that you cut your chance of the opportunity to
learn on those particular classes. It also means that you cut down your number of attendance and
that also means that you lose your chance to participate in recitations or quizzes. Cutting classes
could make you have those chance of having fun somewhere---be it alone or with peers—but, it
can definitely take away many lifetime chances and tons of great learning.
4
Assumption
The proposed study aims to determine the Effects of Cutting Classes in Academic
Performance of Grade-10 students of Maranatha Christian Academy of Caloocan, Inc. that will
help students to be aware of all the harmful and bad effects that they will get due to cutting
classes and to enlighten them to change their ways and stop skipping classes.
This study also sought to address and answer the following questions:
1. What will happen to their academic performances if they don’t attend class?
2. Will this research contribute to an effective solution after the students read about it?
3. Do this research help parents be more responsible in being aware of their children’s’
attendance and performances in school and help them recognize the cause why their
children skip classes and help them stop doing it afterwards?
4. Would this research helps a lot of students?
Hypothesis of the Study
The researchers conducted this study for raising awareness of the Effects of Cutting
Classes in Academic Performances of Grade-10 students of Maranatha Christian Academy of
Caloocan, Inc. and for the establishment of the solution to the present problem. The hypothetical
affirmations that will contribute as researchers’ basis for further investigation are as follows:
1. Cutting classes among Grade-10 students had become an everyday fact of life.
2. The problems that go with cutting classes are making such a great harm to the students’
lives.
5
3. The proposed study, indeed, make students aware that cutting classes can contribute to
low grades, less class participation, reduce opportunities to learn, reduce social/class
interaction, poor attendance, failure knocking at doorsteps, etc.
4. The proposed study can give solutions to the said problem and to instil to the minds of
Grade-10 students of the school being mentioned here in that wrong choices often
followed by bad consequences.
Scope and Delimitation
The study covers the Effects of Cutting Classes in Academic Performances of Grade-10
students of Maranatha Christian Academy of Caloocan, Inc. These topics include the cause why
students of Grade-10 of MCA-Caloocan do cutting classes; the effects of cutting classes to their
academic performances; and, what measures and solutions that are needed to reduce or stop it.
Also, this is only exclusive/applicable to Grade-10 students of MCA-Caloocan, Inc. and their
parents.
Significance of the Study
The proposed study is expected to present solution that will be beneficial to the following:
Grade 10 Students – They will benefit a lot in this study, because they will know how important
school is. This study helps them value “class attendance”, because it is as important as going to
one’s beloved job.
Parents – This study will help them to guide their son/daughters on their studies.
Teachers – They can help the students to go to school and they can talk to them.
6
Definition of Terms
Cutting classes – When you don’t attend a class at which your presence is expected. It has more
relevance in elementary and high schools, when students are required to attend every class unless
they have a note from a parent or guardian. In college it’s not really cutting because nobody
course whether or not you attend. It’s up to you to manage your time. Either you go or you don’t,
but if you choose not to attend be prepared to accept a lower grade for the course as a
consequences.
Rampant – If you describe something bad, such as a crime or disease as rampant you very
common and is increasing in uncontrolled way.
Truant – A person can be a truant and behaviour can be described as truant too, since it’s both a
noun and an adjective. Your teacher might call you a truant if you skip school and if you didn’t
show up at your donut shop job, you would also be a truant donut slinger. In fact, anyone who’s
unexpectedly absent can described as truant. The Old French truant describes a beggar,
especially one who lives this way by choice.
Dereliction – The shameful failure to fulfil one’s obligations. Incapacitated him self in such a
way that he cannot perform his duties.

CHAPTER 2
Introduction
This chapter is divided into the review of related literature and studies.
Related Literature
This part is based on the studies made from books. article, and other reading or printed
resources involving to explain the research.
Foreign. According to Kenneth Duckworth and John De Jung (2010), “Inhibiting Class Cutting
among High School Students” Class cutting imposes serious costs on high school education
programs. Teachers’ structural efforts are undermined by students who cut class. Such students
fall behind in classwork unless teacher spend extra time giving make up work, and students who
fall behind are likely to become discipline problems in the classroom. Administrators’ efforts to
provide educational lead-lost in locating absentees and contacting their parents. If these costs are
to be reduced, it is important to identify factors that result in lower rates of class cutting. One
important factor student’s feelings of inhibition. Students may feel inhibited or uninhibited about
cutting class, and those attitudes may affect their behaviour. The question then is, what are the
sources of inhibition? Students are likely to feel inhibited. and therefore are less likely to cut
class, if they believe that cutting will result in negative consequences. Students may fear that
schools will impose two kinds of negative consequences for cutting-academic and disciplinary
penalties.
According to Tawnell D. Hobbs, (August 30, 2018) The growing problem of children
skipping school has districts across the country experimenting with solutions, from punishments
to rewards. Educators are divided about what approach works. Students who miss school are
more likely to fall behind and are at greater risk of dropping out.
10
According to Bernard Wolinez, years ago, cutting classes was considered something
akin to a high crime or jail break, chief administrator of the Office of High School Support
Services. “But social attitudes have changed. Today, cutting is much more rampant in some
schools” Educators say cutting contributes to several larger problems: low grades; violence in the
schools, including the recent rash of attacks on teachers, and, most important, a high dropout rate
26.3 percents over the four years of high school for the 1987 class, according to figures released
last week.
Local. According to Viola (2016), every time a student cuts class, it’s inevitable that they are
also cutting their education. It is said that going to school is like a having a job, they are mostly
alike in such reason that you get paid with knowledge. In fact, being always present in class and
getting to school on time are two of the crucial determining factors of a student’s success, not
just as a student but as a person who will be managing his/her own life in the future.
According to Chito Chavez (2019), “Students do cutting classes so that they can spend
more time in Computer shops” Complaints of students cutting classes and spending time in
internet shops even during class hours have risen in Quezon City weeks after the start of this
school year. With this scenario, several Quezon City councilors probed the city government and
concerned agencies to send teams that will randomly conduct inspections n computer shops and
internet cafes operating in the city, and penalize them if found to be accommodating students
during class hours.
It was hypothesized by Taylor III (2012) on a study that cutting classes harms exam
scores, attending pre exam reviews help exam scores, taking optional exam preparation quizzes
helps exam scores, and earlier exam scores in the semester predict later exam scores. It is
because cutting classes may result into lack of knowledge regarding on your lessons. The lack
knowledge may also result into poor academic performance and sooner may lead into failing
11
grades. Cutting of classes may have its effects towards the grades of the several students. Cutting
of classes have its significant relationship with the students academic performances. Failing
grades and poor academic performance may be the result of cutting classes and it would be worst
if it will not be prevented. Moreover, this problem is one of the most rampant issue in many
school around the Philippines.
Related Studies
Foreign.
According to Lewis Taylor (2012), “Cutting classes harms grades” The hypothesis is that
cutting classes truly harm the students’ exam scores, behaviour and their reviews. A study should
be using an object measurement method of actual events and actual exam scores to provethis.
According to Samuel Weiss (2010), “As class cutting rises snowball effect is feared”
Cutting class has become an everyday fact of life in New York City’s high schools. Educators
view it as dangerous step for academic failure of many young people. In general, the effect is
bad. There are exceptions but generally, this students who cut classes, whatever they say are
actually losing touch with their fellow student, the material of the subject, and the person
responsible for their [Link] are developing habits opposed to application to tasks when
the going gets rough, or when the going is routine. These situations will occur in the real world
of employment too. The student’s future employer will not be amused when they skip work for a
day because it’s dull, or because it’s hard, or because they’re hung-over or, whatever. If the need
to cut class is really pressing, admit the truth, drop the class, choose another one (Ian
Carmichael, 1996-2017).
12
Local.
According to Cristoria and Isles (2014), “Violators would undergo counselling on the first
offense, then made to render up to 36 hours of community service on the second offense. A third
offense would draw a fine or less than P500”. In local context, specifically in Cebu City, the
local government in Cebu City arises a local ordinance that prohibited students from staying out
of class without valid excuse, students would be prohibited from loitering in malls or in other
entertainment establishments in Cebu province from 7 a.m. to 2 noon and 1p.m. to 5 p.m. during
weekdays. The Cebu Provincial Board yesterday approved on third and final reading an
ordinance that prohibits students from skipping classes (silva, 2014).
This ordinance proves that the said issue is serious. Cutting of class becomes a gateway
to darker, serious problems. The researchers witness how relevant the cutting classes, he/she
will eventually have to find something to do with his unauthorized free time. Since most of the
youth nowadays have lost several good values that act as a safeguard for several undesirable,
immoral activities.
According to Department of Education (2009) cutting of classes become a rampant
problem in publics schools in the Philippines. Public schools in the Philippines where there is
inefficient security and a relatively high numbers of students thus making it hard to monitor each
student. (Viola, 2016). According to Unveiling The Dark Side Of Education, cutting of classes
is rampant in the Philippines’ public schools for the reason that there is an inefficient security
and relatively high number of students that makes it hard for the school to monitor.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY
This chapter represents the methodology of research and procedures used in gathering
information for the study. It includes the research method, methods of the study, survey method,
sources of data, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data.
RESEARCH DESIGN
This research will used descriptive type of research. Because this research aims to
described why the students cut class, descriptive type of research is the most appropriate to use
in this study.
RESEARCH LOCALE
Maranatha Christian Academy Of Caloocan, Inc. is a company engaged in Educational
Institutions located in 1594 Jasmin St. Area A, Libis, Camarin, Caloocan City.
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The respondent of the study are all grade 10 students in Maranatha Christian Academy
of Caloocan. The sampling technique or method that used for selecting the respondents is
purposive technique. It refers to a method where in one or a group of individuals was selected
based on the performance of the entire grade 10. The students respondents were selected because
they met the maximum counts of absent. The proponents have chosen this method since it is the
most convenient and suitable way of choosing grade 10 students from the population of Junior
High School in Maranatha Christian Academy of Caloocan.
14
RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
The main instrument used in gathering information was a questionnaire. As for
Britannica, Qualitative research focuses on descriptive words and symbols and usually
involves observing consumers in a marketing setting or questioning them about their product
or service consumption experiences.
VALIDATION OF INSTRUMENT
Validation of the research instrument was used to determine and measure what is
intended to measure. Validation is a process of confirming that an existing programme
of study or a newly designed one can continue or commence operation.
ADMINISTRATION AND RETRIEVAL OF INSTRUMENTS
The researchers asked their thesis adviser personally for their thesis to be approved.
When their thesis was approved, the survey was conducted by giving a questionnaire
individually to each grade 10 students, the administration of the questionnaire was given the
student’s third period subject. The researchers explained to respondents that the survey
results will only be used for the purpose of the study.
STATISTICAL TREATMENT
Response to the questionnaire by grade 10 students were statistically analyzed with
the data requirements of the study. Students were statistically analyzed with the data
instruments of the study. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count, mean, percent and
rank considered. The researchers used three methods in quantifying data.
The three methods are: (1) ranking; (2) percentage; (3) weighted mean.
15
Ranking
Ranking method is one of the simplest performance evaluation methods. In this method,
employees are ranked from best to worst in a group. The simplicity of this method is over
shadowed by the negative impact of assigning a 'worst' and a 'best' rating to an employee.
Percentage is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is often denoted using the
percent sign, %, or the abbreviation “pct”. It is utilized to determined the most probable scenario.
Percentage method was used to determined the findings, analysis and interpretation
based on percentage using the formula:
P = F/N X 100
Where:
P – Stands for Percentage
F – Stands for Responsive Frequency
N – Stands for the total no. of respondents
16
Weighted Mean
A weighted average (weighted mean or scaled average) is used when we consider some
data values to be more important than other values and so we want them to contribute more to
the final "average". This often occurs in the way some professors or teachers choose to assign
grades in their courses. The weighted mean is a method that is similar to arithmetic mean where
an average is calculated taking into account not only the frequencies of a variable but also some
other factors such as their variance. Its observed data is the result of dividing the sum of the
products of each observed value, the number of times it occurs, and this other factor by the total
number of observations.
WM = FxW
Where:
WM – Weighted Mean; it represents the average of a given data
F – Frequency
W – Weight
N – Total number of respondents

CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter presents the summary of the research findings, the researchers conclusion
and further recommendations of the researchers to their study entitled: “Effects of Cutting
Classes to the Academic Performances of Grade 10 Students of Maranatha Christian Academy
of Caloocan”
SUMMARY
Cutting classes is one of the biggest problems education institutions are facing since the
beginning of time. We tried to look for solutions that will help students, teachers, parents and
future readers what would be the effects if they do cutting classes.
There is need to continue to raise awareness among Grade-10 students about the bad
effects of cutting classes in their academic performances and promotes the need of family
counselling inside their homes, as well as, the need of counselling within the counselling within
the school premises to effectively enlighten those students about the necessity of always being
present in every classes and for them to feel genuine love. Cutting classes was never a good thing
to do. It really affects your academic performance, because cutting classes also means that you
cut your chance of the opportunity to learn on those particular classes. Cutting classes has been
one of the major problems that ever arise in the world of Education. And, students in Maranatha
Christian Academy of Caloocan are no exempted to the dilemmas.
To summarize the collected data and analysis. The response of the grade 10 students said
that many of them did not try cutting classes, but some grade 10 student experienced rather tried
to cut classes. Many of them said that the reasons why students cut classes is because student
23
response that it is boring, they feel the tardiness and peer pressure. But other students said that
they tried cutting classes to find happiness. But in some cases the effects of cutting classes in the
student voted that if you skip a class your grades will fall back. Other students lack of
experience if they do cutting classes.
CONCLUSION
Therefore, the researchers conclude that:
1. Attendance is the most affected thing when students do cutting classes. Second is the
performance task which is the biggest point for making grades, that’s why students who cut
classes have a low grades. Sometimes this is the reason why some students failed their
subjects.
2. This research will contribute to the future readers a lot because It explains how studying is
important and cutting classes would not be a good help to their future.
3. That the common reason that cutting classes occur is boring. Second is the tardiness. Third is
peer pressure. And lastly, others like they want to try it because they are curious.
24
RECOMMENDATION
1. Students should avoid being lazy and be more responsible to do their work as a student.
2. Students should think about their grades and how studying will help them in the future.
3. Proper monitoring, security and discipline should be given to the students by their guidance
and parents.
4. Principals and teachers should monitor their students and counsel them from time to time in
their schools.
5. Teachers should make their lessons fun and interesting so the students won’t feel bored or
uninterested. Causing them to cut classes.
