Introduction
As defined by the World Health Organization (2019),
"Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s
dietary needs." There are two kinds of Nutrition, namely: Good
Nutrition and Poor Nutrition. Good nutrition is when a person's
food intake is healthy and is according to a balanced diet with a
regular physical activity or exercise. While poor nutrition is the
contradictory negative state of a person that can lead to the
acquisition of some mild infections up to the formation of several
illnesses. Proper diet, on the other hand, is interconnected with
nutrition. This emphasizes the importance of eating go, grow, and
glow foods without consuming too much in a respective aspect.
Ensuring a proper diet is necessary for achieving good health and
proper nutrition.
Meanwhile, go, grow, and glow foods are just simply
nutritional curriculum. Go foods contain grains, which basically
gives the body energy and are often breakfast intake. Glow foods
are fruits and vegetables that mostly contain the vitamins and
minerals that the body needs. Lastly, grow foods are milk and
meats that helps the body and its muscles to grow and develop.
Nutrition and Proper Diet are important to children of
daycare education- these are the learners from preschool to early
elementary, specifically grade 3. These are obviously the crucial
years of nurturance and development. The quality of education is
to be represented by the interaction of both teachers and students,
to the point wherein the parents could also share the rearing of
their child to the society. Moreover, this critical stage of learning
could lead to easier means of teaching appropriate food intake and
familiarity with the concept of healthy diet.
The youths are said to be the future of our world, therefore
it is also vital for the forthcoming educators to really employ legit
stand on these concerns to widen the point of views and introduce
the concept on how to be open-minded to ideas especially for the
betterment of one’s mind and body.
Rationale
or According to the definition of the Philippine Statistics
Project Authority (2010), Malnutrition is explained as a pathological state,
Description either general or specific, resulting from a relative or absolute
deficiency or excess in the diet of one or more essential nutrients,
which may be manifested clinically or detectable by physical,
biochemical and/or functional signs. In addition, in the side of the
World Health Organization (2016), Malnutrition refers to
deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in a person’s intake of
energy and/or nutrients. The term malnutrition covers 2 broad
groups of conditions. One is ‘undernutrition’— which includes
stunting (low height for age), wasting (low weight for height),
underweight (low weight for age) and micronutrient deficiencies or
insufficiencies (a lack of important vitamins and minerals). The
other is overweight, obesity and diet-related non-communicable
diseases (such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer).
With these distinctions being said, the term “Malnutrition,” normally
comes hand in hand with the concept of acquired immuno-
imbalanced diseases and alarming cases of out of school youths
because of poor health conditions- such issues specified that are
currently evident in this country, the Philippines.
Rendering to a recent study by the Food and Nutrition
Research Institute or FNRI (2019), the current chronic malnutrition
rate among Filipino children aged 0 to 2 is at 26.2 percent, the
highest in 10 years. In fact, one in three children in the Philippines
has had their growth underdeveloped by malnutrition. Where, if
this restricting occurs after two years of age, there is a high
chance of irreversibility that can sooner lead to fatality. In addition,
the United Nations Children's Fund or UNICEF (2019) explained
that the interaction between undernutrition and infection can create
a potentially lethal cycle of worsening illnesses and deteriorating
nutritional status. Poor nutrition in the first 1,000 days of a child’s
life living in the Philippines can also lead to undersized growth,
which is normally associated with impaired cognitive ability and
reduced school and work performance.
With the continuous dilemma of malnutrition in the country,
several NGO’s and government programs were humbly generated
to at least diminish or eradicate a half portion of the issue. To
strengthen this claim, a Malnutrition Reduction Program (MRP)
under the DOST-FNRI team addresses the undernutrition problem
among young children. The DOST PINOY strategy under the MRP
is a package of intervention which involves direct feeding of rice-
mongo based complementary foods for 6 months to below 3 years
old children and nutrition education among mothers and
caregivers. The complementary food technology and the
intervention strategy are being rolled-out to the countryside as part
of the solutions to the malnutrition problem among the Filipino
young children.
Of all those related studies and statistics said, the group
cited the most manifested community problems, among the
youths, that are relevant in today's time. This lead to the decision
to have a lecture proper tackling the concept of Nutrition and
Proper Diet. The fundamental reasons for this project are: a)
Insufficiency of knowledge about the topic, b) Poverty, with two
sub topics: 1) Inaccessibility to education, and 2) Lack of enough
budgets for nutritious food.
This project focuses on students in their early childhood
stage because they still have insufficient knowledge about
Nutrients and Proper Diet for they often focus on playing games
and doing this with their friends, according to the "Child
Development by Age" of Louise Bates Ames, Ph. D.
Poverty is also one of the reasons why the group wants to
conduct this project. Children belonging to the poverty line have no
access to nutrition and proper diet, and they also have no enough
money for food. According to Impact of the Financial and
Economic Crisis on Nutrition– Policy and Programme Responses,
"Increases in the cost of food often leads to changes in the
quantity and type of foods that are purchased. This may result in a
reduction in the amounts of foods consumed and/or the
substitution of higher priced foods for less expensive foods which
are often less nutritious."
The project does not aim to eradicate the ignorance of the
children towards nutrition and proper diet, hence, it aspire to teach
them what the topic is all about, how one is able to practice it, and
the importance of it in their daily lives. The members also believe
that if this will be learned at a very young age, the chances of the
children acquiring illnesses will be minimized and somehow
avoided.
This Community Project Proposal aims to conduct a
community project that will emphasize the importance of nutrition
and the significance of having a proper diet among children in the
early childhood education stage. This project encompasses the
following:
a. To casually informed those children with issues and cases
of malnutrition in the Philippines,
Project b. To educate the youths on the right choice of foods to
Objectives include in their diet,
c. To promote different strategic method to reflect the values
of proper nutrition in their food plate,
d. To introduce the maintaining styles of proper diet and
knowing the healthy foods, and
e. To minimize the misconceptions and taboo theories about
the importance of nourishment in relation to the social
economic status.
Project To start with, the group will be allotting 2 weeks to prepare
Components after planning the project. The first week will be allotted for the
group to be able to coordinate with the authorities or the barangay
officials for the permissions, legality and support for the project.
Also, to disseminate the announcement within the community,
posting of posters in the streets of the community and giving flyers
to the parents will be executed. Aside from these, the group will be
using the social media (e.g. Facebook) to spread information and
details regarding the said plan. The second week is for the
finalization of the budget, procurement and purchasing of the
materials needed for the project.
After the two week preparation, the beginning of the
meeting sessions with the children will take place. This program is
to be executed on the second and last week of every month,
during Saturdays. This will be going on for five months, with 5
related topics to discuss, namely: 1. Introduction to Proper Diet
and Nutrition; 2. Go, Grow and Glow Foods; 3. Food Pyramid; 4.
The Yes and Nos of Proper Diet and Nutrition; and 5. Review of
the Topics Discussed. The first Saturdays of each month will be
reserved for these. The first program of the first month of
execution will start with a brief orientation of the things to do, the
happenings or activities to expect, and explanation of the
program's objectives. Thereafter, the registration of the interested
participants will take place. This will include the acquisition of the
children's data, specifically the height and weight, as vital
information of the Pre-Test. Then, an activity namely "My Food
Plate" would be joined by the students also for an assessment for
the aforementioned test. Then, the program will continue with its
lecture.
On the other hand, the second Saturdays of each month
are meant for reviews of the past lesson. Activities and such are to
be executed during these days, in order to observe the learnings
and change that the topic has brought to the children. These will
go on for five months, with the addition of Post-Test on the last day
of meeting. An evaluation will also be performed among the
children, having an activity that encompasses the essence of all 5
topics discussed.
The project targets to reach a certain low-lying community
in order to connect with children of childhood education who are in
Target the nursery to grade 3 and are aging from 3 to 8 years old. The
Beneficiaries/ proposals’ proponents target to cater about 70 children within the
Participants said age range. They will be part of the 5-month tutorial and
feeding program. Hence, this group strictly limits this plan to run
for those who are not a part of Early Childhood Education.
