Akzo Nobel's Duomeen TDO: Point

Duomeen TDO is a cationic fatty alkyl amine pigment dispersant that improves color dispersion in solvent-thinned and powder coatings. It is effective for both organic and inorganic pigments, especially oxides and chromates. Duomeen TDO acts as a wetting agent, corrosion inhibitor, adhesion promoter, and prevents pigment re-conglomeration. It is a liquid or paste with a strong amine odor that is soluble in isopropanol, benzene, and mineral oil but insoluble in water.

Akzo Nobel’s Duomeen TDO

Product Description
Duomeen TDO (Tallow diamine Di-Oleate) is a cationic fatty alkyl amine. The amine possess
a partially or fully charged nitrogen which provide the outstanding characteristic of being
able to be absorbed to solid surfaces. The non-polar fatty chain is oriented towards the sol-
vent.

Product Applications
Duomeen TDO can be used in all types of solvent-thinned coating, both air dry and baked and in powder coatings
to improve color dispersions. It can be used with both organic and inorganic pigments but is more effective in
inorganic (oxides, chromates). Typically formulated into the dispersion base.
• Marine coatings: • Solvent base coatings • Printing inks
• Under water Epoxy ~3% • Rust primer • Pigment pastes

Features Advantages
• Pigment Dispersant • Superior wetting agent for inorganic (oxides, chrom-
ates), Reduces grind time, better Hegman Grind, bet-
ter gloss

• Corrosion Inhibitors • Provides adhesion of the coating and other components

(including anti-corrosion additives such as chromate
pigment) onto the substrate
• Neutralizes strong acids (water-borne acids such as
carbonates) and by fighting the presence of water also
minimizes the interaction of dissolved oxygen and car-
bon dioxide that also causes corrosion
• Hydrophobic, substrate wetter, • Instantaneously displace water present on the
Adhesion promoter substrate to allow easy application and brushing
of the coating onto the substrate
• Good for primers and topcoats
• Prevents re-conglomeration • Causes less kick-out & settling which leads to higher
by Steric interaction pigment loading (fewer dispersions)
