Grade 3 Math: Understanding Symmetry

This lesson plan outlines a mathematics lesson on symmetry for grade 3 students. The objectives are for students to identify symmetry and lines of symmetry, demonstrate cooperation during group work, and appreciate the importance of symmetry. The lesson will include a video, examples of symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes, group activities like drawing shapes, puzzles and song making, and an assessment to identify symmetrical and asymmetrical objects. The goal is for students to understand what symmetry is and be able to identify it.

DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 3

l. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion, 1oo% of grade 3 pupils are expected to:
A. Identify symmetry and the line of symmetry in a given shape;
B. Demonstrate cooperation in doing the group work activity;
C. Show appreciation on the importance of symmetry.

ll. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: “Symmetry”
Skills: identifying and observing
Values: Cooperation and Appreciation

C. ENABLING ACTIVITIES
“OBSERVE ME”
The teacher will present a figure in class and the students will observe them briefly.

Then after that, the teacher will fold the figure into half. And will ask the students to
share some ideas that they have been notice after folding the figure.

What is the figure?

What have you noticed after folding the figure?

3. ABSTRACTION

SYMMETRY - If it can be split into two mirror-image halves.

- any line splitting a shape into two parts such that the two parts are
the same is called a line of symmetry.

The teacher will show an example of symmetry in class.

4. GENERALIZATION

The teacher will ask the students to complete the sentences by filling up the
space in the sentence.

After the discussion I have learned that when a figure or object is folded in
half it is called ________________.

5. APPLICATION
The teacher will divide the class into 4 groups and will be given different task to
do. Then each group will present in front of the class and discuss their answer.

GROUP 1: “LET’S DRAW’

Draw at least 5 symmetrical figures and 5 not symmetrical real object then explain why
it is symmetrical and not symmetrical.

answer in front of the class.
GROUP 3: “SING WITH ME’’
