A local restaurant is offering an eat all you can buffet dinner to its customers at a fixed price. People pay
fixed price and is treated with all food they can eat for the night as well as endless juice drinks.

The food consists of local dishes in the Philippines such as tinola, pansit, fried chicken and others. To add
to the dish’s certain local seafood items such as lokot, goso and talaba are added to the buffet table.

One patron is fond of eating steamed talaba and is very delighted to see numerous meaty shells of
talaba laid open in the buffet table. The person ate a lot of the talaba on that night.

About 48 hours later, the person starts to have watery stool and visited the toilet more than 5 times in
the day. The person thought that it was just normal bout of LBM. All the person dis was to make sure he
consumes a lot of electrolyte from bottled sports drinks to counteracts the dehydration of his body. On
the second day, the diarrhea increased in frequency and the person began to feel a fever and started to
feel weak. He also noticed some traces of blood on his diarrhea.

Taking no further chances, the person immediately went to a hospital. Stool examination revealed
traces of infectious micro-organisms. The person was given medication and was out of the hospital after
a week. According to the doctor, if the person did not seek medical attention, it could had been
dangerous to his health that may result to death.

1. What food do you think had caused the food borne illness of the person?
2. Based on the lesson, list down as many possible micro-organisms that may have caused the
person’s illness?
3. If you are the owner of the restaurant, how could you avoid the incident from happening in your
restaurant?
