Ideas.
Very good class! Those are scenarios
implying unfairness and not showing
sensitivity to others.
These are under the concept of Bias and
Prejudice. Are you familiar with these
words? (varied answers)
Alright. The scenario given by Bambi is an
example of a Bias.
“My former teacher gave high grades only
to those students who are close to her.”
Now, Does the scenario favor a person, or
group of people? Yes or No?
Yes, Ana. “Yes”
Very good. From this example scenario,
what do you think “bias” means?
Anyone? Yes, John. “Bias means showing favoritism.”
Awesome! Anyone else?
Yes, Anelyn? “Bias is an act or statement of unfairness by
favoring a person, thing or idea.”
How about the scenario given by Arnold
and Hazel?
“When my classmate said I am a gay just
because she saw me cry.”
“People misinterpret my mannerism not
knowing my health condition.”
Are these statements of Biases? “It can be, Ma’am Bhev”
Hmm.. Are you sure? How about the
others? Do you think these are biases?
Yes, Brithany. “I think no, Ma’am.”
Why? “Because it doesn’t show favoritism rather it
focuses on giving unfavorable opinion or feeling
towards a specific person.”
Very good. These statements are now
what we call, “Prejudice”.
But how do you think these statements
show unfavorable opinion or feeling? Any
idea? Yes, Penelope. “I think ma’am by giving prejudgment towards a
person without reliable basis and enough
knowledge.”
Exactly! Very Good Class. See, you got to
define Bias and Prejudice by analyzing
your given scenarios.
Presentation of the lesson
Our lesson for today is about “Bias and
Prejudice.”
At the end of the lesson, you are expected
to;
a. differentiate bias and prejudice
based on the given scenarios;
b. show situation that depicts bias
and prejudice; and
c. show sensitivity to others.
Discussion
Class, I have here scenarios which I want
you to think whether it is fair or unfair.
Unfair
1. Not hiring someone because of their
age or gender. Unfair
2. Some people assume someone is gay
because of the way he acts.
Alright, the first scenario favors certain
people and classified as bias. The second
shows discrimination for it tells us
unfavorable opinion and pre-judges others
and that’s what we call prejudice.
Bias means a tendency to favor one
person, group, thing, or point of view over
another, often in an unfair way.
Example:
“Female teachers give more attention to girls.” is
Joining exclusive clubs where certain also an example of bias.
people are not allowed.
Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or
feeling formed beforehand or without
knowledge, thought or reason. It simply
means to pre-judge others.
An individual may be prejudiced against
others based on factors such as;
- Race
- Age
- Gender
- Sexual
- Orientation
- Class status
- Religion
- Nationality
Example:
“It is sometimes assumed that someone who is
Some landlords will not rent to a gay physically disabled is also mentally disabled.” is
couple. also an example of prejudice.
Enrichment Activity / Application
WATCH THAT LABEL
I will let you watch a video clip featuring a
Filipino actress who claims that it is not
right to put a label on anyone. Watch it
and find out label attached to her. But first
let us read the guide questions because
after watching it, I’ll call someone to
answer each.
Here are the guide questions. “Malandi or Flirt”
1. What is the label attached to the
woman in the video? “Yes, it happened in real life situations.”
2. Do you agree with what the woman
said? Why? “Yes, because you see others in a negative way or
side.”
3. When you put “label” on someone, are
you also biased? Why? (varied answers)
4. Do you know women in the same
situation as the actress? What
comments do you hear from other Transcript of the TV commercial:
people about them?
“Shame that there is still double standard. Sayang daw
ako, because I am a single mother. If a guy gets a girl
pregnant, he’s right and it’s natural. But if a girl gets
pregnant, malandi sya. When the news spread of my
pregnancy, people says, she’s on the top of her game.
People make stories like she’s malandi or a woman of the
world. Was I unfairly judged? Yes! But then did it stop
me? No, but does it keep me stronger? Yes! Label is a
challenge I accepted. I want to show people that no
matter what happens to you, it should never stop you
from being successful. As an actress, I’ve never been
happiest. And being a single mom and parent give me
purpose. Sayang! I don’t think so! Can you whip it? I did!”
- Denise Laurel, shampoo TV commercial
Generalizations
