ASSIGNMENT 03 – III MECH A2B1
1. A machine part of mass 2.5 kg vibrates in a viscous medium. Determine the damping
coefficient when a harmonic exciting force of 30 N results in a resonant amplitude of
13 mm with a period of 0.3 second. If the system is excited by a harmonic force of
frequency 4.25 Hz what will be the percentage increase in the amplitude of vibration
when damper is removed as compared with that with damping.
2. A machine has a total mass of 95 kg and unbalanced reciprocating parts of mass 2.5
kg which moves through a vertical stroke of 120 mm with SHM. The machine is
mounted on four springs. The machine is having only one degree of freedom and can
undergo vertical displacement only. Calculate (i). The combined stiffness is the force
transmitted to the foundation is one twelth of the applied force. Neglect damping and
take the speed of rotation of the machine crank shaft as 1200 r.p.m. when the machine
is actually supported on the springs, it is found that the damping reduces the
amplitude of the successive free vibrations by 35%. Find (ii). The force transmitted to
the foundation at 1000 r.p.m.
3. A body of mass 25 kg is suspended from a spring which deflects 20 mm under this
load. Calculate the frequency of free vibrations and verify that a viscous damping
force amounting to approximately 1000 N at a speed of 1 m/s is just-sufficient to
make the motion aperiodic. If when damped to this extent, the body is subjected to a
disturbing force with a maximum value of 125 N making 8 cycles/s, find the
amplitude of the ultimate motion.
4. A mass of 12 kg is suspended from one end of helical spring, the other end is being
fixed. The stiffness of the spring is 12.5 N/mm. The viscous damping causes the
amplitude to decrease to one-tenth of the initial value in four complete oscillations. If
a periodic force of 150 Cos 50t (N) is applied at the mass in the vertical direction, find
the amplitude of the forced vibrations. What is its value of resonance?
5. A single cylinder vertical petrol engine of total mass of 220 kg is mounted upon a
steel chassis frame and causes a vertical static deflection of 2.65 mm. the
reciprocating parts of the engine has a mass of 10 kg and move through a vertical
stroke of 170 mm with SHM. A dashpot is provided whose damping resistance is
directly proportional to the velocity and amounts to 1.6 kN/mm/s, calculate at steady
state a) The amplitude of forced vibrations at 600 rpm engine speed, and b) The speed
of the driving shaft at which resonance will occur.
6. The arms of a Porter governor are each 220 mm long and pivoted on the governor
axis. The mass of each ball is 5.2 kg and the mass of the central sleeve is 35 kg. The
radius of rotation of the balls is 160 mm when the sleeve begins to rise and reaches a
value of 220 mm for maximum speed. Determine the speed range of the governor. If
the friction at the sleeve is equivalent of 25 N of load at the sleeve, determine how the
speed range is modified.
7. A porter governor has all four arms 250 mm long. The upper arms are pivoted on the
axis of rotation and the lower arms are attached to the sleeve at a distance of 30 mm
from the axis. Each ball has a mass of 6.5 kg and the sleeve mass is 50 kg.If the
extreme radii of rotation of the balls are 220 mm and 270 mm, determine the range of
speed of the governor?
8. A proell governor has equal arms of length 240 mm. The upper and lower ends of the
arms are pivoted on the axis of the governor. The extension arms of the lower links
are each 80 mm long and parallel to the axis. When the radii of rotation of the balls
are 140 mm and 185 mm. The mass of each ball is 9 kg and the mass of the central
load is 90 kg. Determine the range of speed of the governor.
9. A ship propelled by a turbine rotor which has a mass of 6 tonnes and a speed of 2200
r.p.m. The rotor has a radius of gyration of 0.6 m and rotates in a clockwise direction
when viewed from the stern. Find the gyroscopic effects in the following conditions:
1. The ship sails at a speed of 32 km/h and steers to the left in a curve having 66 m
radius. 2. The ship pitches 7 degree above and 7 degree below the horizontal position.
The bow is descending with its maximum velocity. The motion due to pitching is
simple harmonic and the periodic time is 22 seconds. 3. The ship rolls and at a certain
instant it has an angular velocity of 0.04 rad/s counter clockwise when viewed from
stern. Determine also the maximum angular acceleration during pitching. Explain how
the direction of motion due to gyroscopic effect is determined in each case.
10. The turbine rotor of a ship has a 2.6 tonnes and rotates at 1800 rpm when viewed from
the right. The radius of gyration of the rotor is 320 mm. Determine gyroscopic couple
and its effect when (i)The ship turns right at a radius of 260 m with a speed of 24
kmph. (ii) The ship pitches with the bow rising at an angular velocity of 0.9 rad/sec.
(iii) The ship rolls at an angular velocity of 0.2 rad/sec.
11. A spring loaded governor of the Hartnell type has arms of equal length. The masses
rotate in a circle of 130 mm diameter when the sleeve is in the mid position and the
ball arms are vertical. The equilibrium speed for this position is 450 r.p.m., neglecting
friction. The maximum sleeve movement is to be 25 mm and the maximum variation
of speed taking in account the friction to be 5 per cent of the mid position speed. The
mass of the sleeve is 4 kg and the friction may be considered equivalent to 30 N at the
sleeve. The power of the governor must be sufficient to overcome the friction by one
per cent change of speed either way at mid-position. Determine, neglecting obliquity
effect of arms 1. The value of each rotating mass: 2. The spring stiffness in N/mm;
and 3. The initial compression of spring.
12. Explain the effect of the gyroscopic couple on the reaction of four wheels of a vehicle.
