OmniVue
TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM
The OMNIVUE system development is the result of many years of international
experience of Swarco in the field of Traffic Control Systems and can be seen as
the next step into the future of Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
The system will support
interfaces to most of the
existing traffic controllers on
the Scandinavian market.
Other controllers supporting
the STCIP standard or legacy
501 protocol can be connected
to the system.
STCIP is a definition within the
NTCIP standards. This uses
SNMP over an IP-communi-
cations.
The OMNIVUE system is build
on a layered design according
to picture.
One major advantage with
Omnivue is the fact that IP is
used for communications. This
opens a world of possibilities in
using all available IP-media on
the market to connect
equipment: Cable or wireless
via GPRS, WLAN or radio.
OmniVue software
OmniVue is using standard IP networking using TCP and UDP protocols providing
maximum flexibility in system configuration for both central server and
workstations as well as field equipment. Microsoft Windows operating system are
used (NT/2000/XP)
The software is protected by license functions that opens functionality according
to a defined configuration. Every operator (user) and workstation has its own
configuration of allowed functions. Access is allowed at log-in.
The user applications are:
Status
Controller’s status and alarms are
continuously stored in the database. On
an operator workstation data can be
retrieved and viewed. Data can be
showed in four different windows:
• present status of all controllers
• alarm list with existing fault details
• log-book of all events
• work orders
Mapstudio
MapStudio provides the overview
map of the system.
The map is multi-layered and layers
can be hidden or showed depending
on zoom factor. Each traffic
controller is represented by a
dynamic object that will change
colour depending to controller
status.
The tool-bar contains several
buttons to give short cuts to
commands and settings
Detailed information is shown on
intersection maps and group status
diagrams.

Command executive
From an operators workstation
controller’s status can be changed.
Controllers can be switched off, set to
amber flash or forced to a plan change.
All commands can be set to start and
stop at optional time and the command
will be stored in the database until the
event shall take place. Commands can
be given to a single controller or any
group of controllers.
Parameter tools
For ITC-1, EC-1 and ELC-2/-3 type of controllers local parameters can be read
and changed. For the controllers there are individual programs mirroring the local
programming panel.
EC-1 parameter and panel tools: ITC/ELC parameter tool
For coordination two applications are used to give uniform access to all
controllers in the system:
• NCP tool provides access to coordination tables
• CCP tool provides access to all time schedules

Traffic data
In all intersection controllers
there are normally several
detectors suitable for volume
measurements. Controllers
can be chosen to
continuously record and
transmit selected detector
data. Data will be stored in
the database and can be
shown in tables or in graphic
views. Data can also be
exported in other file formats
for external processing.
Statistical tools
All events, status changes and
faults, are stored in the SQL
database. Queries can be sent to
the database to find data for any
given configuration, time period
and status/fault events.
The result of the query is
presented as a set of tables and
graphs:
• Query result
• Number of errors
• Length of errors
• Error index
• Error report
Reports can be printed to show
errors or status for the query:

Communication
All communication in OmniVue is based on IP (Internet protocol) which makes
the system independent of communications media. With this you can use existing
cables, WLAN or other wireless methods.
Existing twisted pair copper cables, that before only were used to control traffic
signals, now can be used for other purposes in parallel. With change of
communications the bandwidth has increased with a factor of >100. With
Ethernet connections you can extend the city internal network to every street
corner.
The network is built with small
communications units called
SHDSL Routers, connected to
form a net structure with several
paths for redundancy. Each unit
has connectors to the network
and to the local equipment.
Presently there are interfaces to
all existing traffic controllers on
the Scandinavian market.
Computers and other equipment using Ethernet can also be connected with
TCP/IP protocol.
For traffic controllers open protocols are used to allow suppliers develop
interfaces using commercial available tools. The communications is based on
open protocols according to OSI standards. Application layer uses SNMP. All
communications units can be maintained from central. Updates of software is
possible remotely with use of FTP clients.
The SHDSL unit is designed for the harsh street environment and meets all
apropriate standards.
In the drawing is shown an
Omnivue installations from
Oslo where they combines
optical fibers in a high speed
trunk network with SHDSL
Routers on twisted pairs. In the
network each traffic controller
can be reached on a minimum
of two paths to ensure safe
access.

For wireless IP communications you can use available systems as WLAN, GPRS
and UMTS (3G).
To connect EPC-4 or other small controllers there is a
small GPRS-unit that has been adapted to
communicate to Omnivue. The unit is connected to
the serial port if the EPC-4 and is powered from the
12V output in the controller. Messages that can be
read includes status and error codes. The unit has
also a few parallel I/O that can used to connect to
other types of control equipments.
Network monitoring
In large network monitoring of the
network is an essential function.
The network has redundancy in
several layers to minimize impact
of single faults. It is then
important that these faults are
discovered and cured before
further faults knocks down major
parts of network. There are
several commercial software
packages available. Swarco
recommends the use of ”What’sUp
Gold”. The picture shows an
example of Omnivue in Malmö
where all MDSL-units are
monitored.
