Explanatory Research

Explanatory research seeks to explain why a phenomenon occurs by exploring causes and effects. It uses a systematic approach to study a problem that has not been well researched before. Explanatory research attempts to connect ideas and understand relationships between variables through in-depth literature reviews, interviews, focus groups, and case analyses. While it provides insights and flexibility, explanatory research faces challenges like bias and small samples.

WHAT IS EXPLANATORY

RESEARCH?

QUANTITATIVE QUALITATIVE
DATA DATA
MEANING OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH
• Is conducted for a problem that was not
well researched before.
• Type of Research Design- focuses on
explaining the aspects of your study in
detailed manner.
– It is a systematic approach that a
researcher uses to conduct a scientific
study.
MEANING OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH

• This kind of research seek to explain the

subject matter being researched and
tries to answer the question:

WHY
MEANING OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH

• This type of research attempts to

connect different ideas and understand
the different reasons, causes and effects.
• It also tries to explain the relationships
between the variables.
WHY CONDUCT
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH?

PURPOSE OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH
• Increasing Understanding

• The Flexibility of Sources

• Better Conclusion
CHALLENGES OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH
• Bias Information

• Useless Samples
TYPES OF EXPLANATORY

• Literature Research

• In-Depth Study of Every Single Problem

• Focus Group Research

• Case Analysis Research

LITERATURE SEARCH

• Fastest and least expensive.

• This includes the research
using magazines, newspaper,
trade literature and academic
literature.
DEPTH INTERVIEW

• Talking to a person who is well informed

about the research topic.
FOCUS GROUP

• Gathering of people with

common objective and
information about specific
problem on hand .
• Composed of 8-12 members
CASE ANALYSIS

• Analysis of the different cases related

to the subject that you are studying.
CHARACTERSITIC OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH
Amount of Uncertainty Clearly Defined

Key Research Statement Research Hypothesis

When Conducted? Later Stages of Decision

Making
Usual Research Approached Highly Structured

Examples: “Will consumers buy more

products in a blue packages?
“Which of the two advertising
campaigns will be effective?”
ADVANTAGE OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH
• Instrument in terms of identifying
the reason behind a wide range of
processes.
• Offers the advantages of replication
if the necessity arises.
• Associated with greater levels of
internal validity- Systematic
selection of subjects.
DISADVANTAGES OF
EXPLANATORY RESEARCH
• Coincidences in events may be perceived as
cause and effect relationship.
• It can be difficult to reach appropriate
conclusion on a basis of research finding.
• In certain cases, while the correlation
between two variables can be effectively
established –identifying which variable is a
cause and which one is the impact can be a
difficult task to accomplish.
