Activity:
Students are paired into groups of two in each group and asked to stand, introduce
themselves and think of a holiday destination they would like to visit. For e.g.,
Ann: Hello everyone! My name is Ann. This holiday I would like to go to
Mysore. Where would you like to go?
(she asks the student standing on her left side, the student to her left starts)
Mary: Hello everyone! My name is Mary. This holiday I would like to go to
Mangalore. Where would you like to go?
And it continues till everyone gets their turn to speak.
Once all the students have had their turn to speak, each one has to come forward
and write the name of their favorite destination on the board. While they come
forward to write the name they have to speak about one interesting thing about
that destination. The teacher makes sure that she has at least 8-10 names of the
holiday destinations on the board. She asks the students to rank each destination
from 1 (for most interesting place) to 9-10 (for the least interesting place)
individually. Next, She puts the students into pairs and allows them to discuss and
get some feedback- which destination is the most popular?
Context The teacher explains the students that going for a trip involves many things. So,
setting or first the students read a conversation of two friends talking about travel. Teacher
pairs up the students and asks them to read the conversation. (Refer to the
Pre- conversation worksheet)
speaking Give feedback, if any of the conversation relates to their travel activities.
Next, the teacher asks the pairs to take up the roles of Max and Tim, one who
takes up the role of Max has to ask the same questions given in the conversation
and the other student who takes the role of Tim has to give answers of his own
related to his travel history. Then they have to switch over the roles.

Max: Have you ever been out of the country?
Tim: No. I haven’t.

Tim: English, but sometimes I have to use body language since not all people are
good at English.
Max: What do you usually do during your trip?
Tim: I often go sightseeing, relax at the beach, go to the museum, shopping, take
some pictures, mingle with people and sample the local cuisine.
Max: What do you do to prepare for your trip?
Tim: I search for the information about the location, famous tourist attractions,
transportation, local cuisine and prices of hotels on the internet before taking the
trip.
Max: What do you usually take along when you travel?

medicine, a map and a camera.

Ask students if they can add any other phrases to each category and get feedback.
Practice drilling these and ask students to underline the stressed words in each
sentence. Ask them to identify which words in English carry stress (verbs and
nouns and words that carry meaning)
Write 'Itinerary' on the board. Explain what the word means (a plan for a trip,
including the places you want to visit). Ask students to imagine that they are
working for a Travel agency and they want to organise a weekend itinerary to any
Indian city. They will have to take the trip themselves first (pilot trip), but they
have to plan their itinerary together and agree on what they would like to do. Put
students in pairs and assign each pair one Fact File (from the worksheet). Give
students time to read the information about their city, and answer any questions
about vocabulary. If you have internet access in class, you can give students extra
time to take a look at the webpages and find out more about their city. If they do
this, set a time limit (10 - 15 mins) and ask them to make notes. Tell students to
look back at the table from Activity 2. Remind them to use this language to plan
their itineraries. They should agree on at least five activities that they want to do
over the weekend After feedback, you could put students into new pairs and give
them a different Fact File, so that they can repeat the activity for a different city.
At the end of the task, ask students which city they would be most interested in
visiting and why. Another alternative is to ask students to present their itinerary to
the rest of the class or to another pair / group. Ask the students listening to make
notes as they listen. At the end each student can vote on which weekend itinerary
they like the best.
Activity-3
Work with a partner to plan your itinerary for a holiday trip. First read the
information. Then together, talk about what you would like to do for the trip.
Use the language from Activity 2 Fact File:
