Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel: Example 1

This document provides an example and activity on calculating interest, principal, rate, time, and maturity value of investments. The example shows how to calculate interest earned on a principal amount for a given interest rate and time period. It also introduces a formula to find the final or maturity value as the principal plus interest earned. The activities ask students to complete a table with the interest, principal, rate, time, and maturity value for various scenarios and to solve word problems applying the concepts.

DISCUSSION:
Finding the Final Amount
Final Amount (F) or Maturity Value is equal to the sum of Principal and Interest.

F=P+I

Example 1: Find the interest and the final amount on P16,400 at 2

½% for 3 months.

3
Solution: P = P16,400.00 r = 2 ½ % t=
12

3
I = Prt I = P16,400.00 (.025) ( )
12
I = P102.50

F=P+I
F = P16,400.00 + 102.50
F = P16,502.50

To find the final amount, we can use another formula

Since F = P + I, and I = Prt

Substituting Prt to I, we get

F =P+I F = P + Prt therefore F = P(1 + rt)

Using this formula to find the find the final amount

3
F = P16,400.00 ( 1 + .025 * )
12
F = P16,502.50

Example 2: Accumulate P18,000 for 60days at 3%

60
Solution: P = P18,000.00 r=3% t=
360
60
F = P18,000 ( 1 + .03 * )
360
F = P18,090.00
