Q 1. An unrestrained reinforced concrete slab of effective dimension 4.5m × 6.0m is


simply supported on all four walls. It has to carry a characteristic live load of 10
kN/sq.m in addition to the dead load. Assuming M25 and Fe415, thickness of
the slab being 200mm and finishing load of 1kN/sq.m, what should be the
design load as per limit state method?
(a) 16 kN/sq.m (b) 24 kN/sq.m (c) 20 kN/sq.m (d) 22 kN/sq.m

Solution:
(i) Live load= 10 kN/sq.m

(ii) Dead load = 1000 × 25 = 5 kN/sq.m
(iii) Finishing = 1 kN/sq.m
(iv) Total load = 16 kN/sq.m
(v) Factored design load = 1.5 × 16 kN/sq.m = 24 kN/sq.m

Answer: 1. (b) 24 kN/sq.m

longer span. Given the cover provided as 20mm, what is the effective depth
along the longer span?

at the continuous edge for shorter span will be, given the factored load as 12

(i) Factored design load = 12 kN/sq.m

(iv) 𝑀𝑥 = 0.053 × 12 × 4.12 = 10.69 kNm

Solution:
(i) Factored design load = 12 kN/sq.m

(iv) 𝑀𝑦 = 0.024 × 12 × 4.12 = 4.84 kNm
