Impact of Technology on Online Identity

Technology allows people to create new online identities that differ from their real selves. Some do this to escape judgment or feel freer online. However, overcommitting to an online identity risks losing touch with one's real self. Henry created different online personas because at 14, people did not take him seriously offline due to his age. While his online identities omitted his age, both aimed to be respected and connect with others through knowledge.

1.) How does technology influence or alter our sense of the self?

Technology, in a way, influence or alter our sense of the self by making it

possible and easy for us to create a new self-identity online. People nowadays
use technology such as phones and computers to interact with other people
around the globe. This is one of the advantages that technology can give. But
people also tend to use technology as a means of creating a new self or identity
in what they call the online world. When people go online, they somehow create
a new persona that is different from their own. It is their way of escaping the
reality that they wanted to avoid. It gives them satisfaction about their own self,
and sometimes it gives them the feeling of being free from judgment of others.
The internet or the online world creates a sense of freedom from everything. The
things that we cannot do in the real world can be done in the online world.

This is the reason why people create a new identity online, for them not to
be judged and to separate their real identity from the new one that they created
on the internet. But the downfall to this is the fact that people mostly prefer their
online identity than their real self. Their online identity gives them so much
satisfaction and attention that makes them forget about who they really are. This
can lead to confusion and avoidance of the real world. When a person becomes
too committed with his online identity, the possibility of him becoming loss of his
real self would be high. If this happens, a person can lose sight of who he really
is and what his real purpose in life was.

There is no problem if one creates an identity of him online that differs

from his real self, but it is important to know the limitations of your actions and to
not forget your real self in the process of creating a new one. Do not let this
change your perceptions of your real self and don’t be drowned from all the
attention that people give to your online self, because at the end of the day, it is
your real self that is left.

2.) What triggers Henry to create different online image?

Everyone has their own reasons as to why they create a different image
online. In the case of Henry, it was his age and his needs to be respected and be
treated as an equal that triggered him to create an online identity.

He pointed out that people would treat you differently when they think you
are twenty-five and not fourteen. Unfortunately, people in the online world would
not take you seriously if they think that you’re young. They would think of you as
an ignorant kid. Henry did not want people to judge what he was saying because
of his age. He liked the feeling of being treated as an intelligent, rational, thinking
human being. If people think that you are their age, they will gladly invite you to
join in their conversation. Henry loved the idea of being accepted and having to
be a part of something.

Overall, He created a different online image because it takes the element

of having to prove oneself to other people.

3.) How did Henry’s online identities differ from his offline identity? Were there
ways their differences resembled one another?

Henry’s online identity differs from his offline identity by means of his age.
In his online identity, he created a person with no specific age while in real world
he was a fourteen-year-old boy.

His online self-depicts a man with enough knowledge about different

issues and topics that was being discussed. In real world, he was seen as a child
who does not have much information about the world and is usually left out of
conversations. He was somehow respected with his online identity which he
cannot feel and experienced with his offline self or real self.

Their differences resembled one another in a way that both identities are
focusing on his knowledge and how he wanted to communicate and connect to
other people. This is what he wants to achieve in both identities that he have
created.

4.) Are there ways to present yourself online without telling lies? If so, how?

In my opinion, I don’t think that there is a way to present one’s self online
without telling lies. And if there is indeed a way, no person would do that. Even in
real life, people tend to lie, so what more in the online world in which technology
helps a person to alter his/her face and figure. Even with the smallest thing,
people lie, whether online or offline.

We cannot say that there are people out there in the online community
which is hundred percent genuine with his/her information that he/she provides.
But this can actually be advantageous to them. People should not give all their
real information, especially those that are personal and confidential, on the
internet because it can be used against them. But if you really wanted to know a
way then there is just one thing that you must do. Just don’t lie. Don’t make up a
persona that is not you. Don’t show a different identity online that is far from who
you really are. Avoid making things up. Once you are in the online world, just be
who you are and accept your own self. This is commonly the reason why people
tend to lie; it is because they are afraid to be rejected for who they really are so
they resorted to making a different self that they know people would love and
accept.

Overall, start by accepting your own flaws and be contented with what you
have. With that you can avoid having to lie online.

26.) What triggers Henry to create different online image?

27.) How did Henry’s online identities differ from his offline identity?
Were there ways their differences resembled one another?

This is what he wants to achieve in both identities that he have
created.

28.) Are there ways to present yourself online without telling lies? If so,
how?
