QUESTIONS.

QUESTION ONE ( 30MARKS ).


a. The roots of 2X2+3X-4=0 are α and β .Find the value of α3+β3 (5mks)

b. The 6th term of a G.P is16 and the third term is2.Find the first term .common ratio
and the sum of the first 6 terms. (4mks)

c.
A particle moves along a straight line in such a way that its distance from a fixed

point on the line after t seconds is S meters , where S = t4.Find

(i)Its velocity after 3 seconds and 4 seconds.
(ii) Its acceleration after 2 seconds and 4 seconds (6mks)

d. By completing the square method, solve the equation

a. In a certain city in Kenya 3 Newspaper are read ,nation ,standards and Taifa-
Leo .Out of 100 Families, 40 read Nation,35 read standard and 25 Taifa –
Leo.24 read Nation and standards, 15 read Nation and Taifa –Leo while 15 read
standard and Taifa-Leo. 10 read all the Newspapers.
How many read
(i)None of the Newspapers (2mks)
(ii) At least one of the Newspaper (2mks)
(iii) One of the Newspapers. (2mks)

b. Find the derivatives of the following

a. Sketch the curve Y = X (X-1) (X-2) by finding Y-intercept, X-intercept, the turning
points (maximum and minimum) and graphing the sketch.
Hence find the area enclosed between the curve and the X-axis. (10mks)

b. A farm rents its premises and the rental agreement provides for a regular annual
increase of 2500 pounds. If the rent in the first year is 8500 pounds what is the
rent in the 10th year?
How much rent in total did the farm pay for each premise over the 10 years (5mks)
