MODULE 10: PERSONS AND CAREERS AND CAREER PATHWAYS

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able:
- explain that understanding the concept of career and life goals can help in planning one’s career,
- identify the personal factors influencing career choices including personality traits or tendencies, socio –
economic factors, or interests, and;
- take a self – assessment tool to know his/her personality traits in relation to his/her life goals.

INTRODUCTION
Imagine yourself on yourself on your retirement day, the last day of your working life, and that the next day you
would be enjoying the rest of your life without having to worry about money or responsibilities. imagine that you are
retiring from a job you have held for so many years. How old do you think you are by that time? What have you
accomplished? Are you a successful person? Are you happy at the end of your CAREER?
A lot of senior citizens realize that the kind of life they lead on their retirement day is because of the kind of decisions
they made when they were your age. Sure there are those who retire happily, but some retire feeling that they have not
done so much and end-up living the rest of their life miserable. You, right now, are not a senior citizen and are still far
from retiring from a career. However, young as you are, it is important that you plan your career ahead of you.
You are now in the stage in your life where you need to come up with life goals. Basically, defined, life goals are
your dreams for your future – “layunin sa buhay” or simply “pangarap”. But unlike your childhood dreams, life goals
are more realistic versions of your dreams.

II. DISCUSSION
Definition of Terms:
 Career – a purposeful life pattern through work undertaken by a person
 Work – an activity that produces something of value for oneself
 Job – paid kind of work held by a person requiring some similar traits or attributes
 Career plan – a plan composed of a series of activities aimed at achieving a career goal

I. PERSONS AND CAREERS

Career Planning
Career, work, and job are terms that are related but have different meanings.

Definition of Terms:
• Work – an activity that produces something of value for oneself
• Job – paid kind of work held by a person requiring some similar traits or attributes
• Career plan – a plan composed of a series of activities aimed at achieving a career goal
 Career – a purposeful life pattern through work undertaken by a person
Purposeful – means that a career has meaning and purpose for the person. Often, the reason a person pursues a
career is to earn a living and to attain life satisfaction.
Life pattern – career encompasses all the adult life roles: being a parent, a spouse, homemaker, and the ways in
which the person blends and arranges these roles.
Work – the term “work” is not limited to activities where we get paid. It can include unpaid activities such as
coaching youth sports teams, leading a choir, or doing religious vocations.
Undertaken by a person – means that careers are chosen by a person and is unique to that person.

In order for you to make your career plan, you need to be informed about many things you have to consider. Below is
a formula for selecting an occupation set by Roe (Roe & Lunneborg, 1990) taken from the book of Reardon et al. (2008)
OCCUPATIONAL CHOICE = S[(eE + bB + cC) + (fF,mM)) + (lL + aA) + (pP x gG x tT x iL)]
Where:
S= sex L= general learning and education

MODULE 10 – PDev’t Subject Teacher:

E= general state of economy A= special acquired skills

B= family background, ethnicity P= physical characteristics
C= chance G= cognitive or special natural abilities
F= friends, peer groups T= temperament and personality
M= marital situation I= interest and values

X-Factors are unknown factors that we need to discover and understand. For each of the factor presented, there are
guide questions you can think about as you make your career plan. Try to answer the questions as you go reading.
Factor 1: INTERESTS
- What do I love doing?
- What kinds of jobs spark my curiosity?
- What do I want to do as my future career?
Interests are things that we enjoy doing or something that sparks our curiosity. A career based on our interests will
make us at ease and motivated than a career that is forced on us which may make us unmotivated. Take note that interests
can easily change, what you want now may not be the same as what you want in the future. In terms of career, think
about your long-standing interest.
Factor 2: ABILITIES, SKILLS AND TALENTS
- What things can I do easily and efficiently?
- What am I good at?
- What jobs would employ my abilities?
This factor is about the things we are good at. There is a wide variety of careers that lead to numerous kinds of jobs.
Anybody can pursue a job related to what they already know or to a job that they think they can learn. However, some
jobs are meant only for those who meet a certain degree of mastery. If this is the case, only those that are qualified can be
able to do the job.

In career planning, interests and abilities are the two most important factors that need to be considered. If both are
considered, career planning will be easier and the consequences of our plans are more manageable. But aside from these
two factors, there are also other things you need to think about.

Factor 3: FAMILY INFLUENCE/EXPECTATIONS

- Who pushes you to decide on a career?
- What should you become in the future?
- Who will support you in your career decisions?
We need to consider some of the expectations of people who will support us in our career decisions. After all, we are
sometimes naïve and it is better to listen to the suggestions of other people who know what to do. In our respective
families, we are often groomed to be an answer to a need. Parents often expect their children to graduate with a degree
that they know will be helpful to the family. This factor tells us that it is also important to listen to the suggestions of our
parents, or teachers, or a career coach, because they are often a good judge of what we can do.
Factor 4: FINANCIAL RESOURCES/CAPABILITIES
- What can you afford?
- What can you do more with less finance?
- Are there people willing to pay for you?

This factor talks about the financial resources you will need to prepare yourself for a career. certain careers would
require college degrees that are expensive and some careers would not need for you to spend a lot. Financial capability is
the most common concern for families who send their children to school. It is a reality that school fees are increasing
every year and even if required fees are paid, it is not an assurance that there is a high paying job after graduation.
Therefore, college education is risky investment. It is a good thing to know that there are available scholarships for
deserving and/or diligent students, as well as there are technical – vocational schools that offer courses with minimal fees
and yet provide for more employment opportunities.
Factor 5: COMMITMENT
- How long can you commit to stay in school?
- How many work opportunities can you sacrifice?
This factor can be called the “golden factor” because it talks about time. Like financial resources, you also “spend”
time to prepare yourself for a career. Most universities and colleges have degree programs that las t for four years.

MODULE 10 – PDev’t Subject Teacher:

Specialized degrees need another year or two to finish. It is a fact that there are students who cannot commit their time in
school and are just waiting for high school to finish so they can start working. Probably because they are badly needed to
increase their family income. However, it is also a fact that many job opportunities do not require extensive college
education. These jobs only require skills and competencies that can be mastered within a year or two in a technical or
vocational school, thus allowing more time for employment.
Factor 6: ACADEMIC OPTIONS
- What do schools offer to achieve my career plan?
- Are there schools that can accommodate my needs?
This factor talks about the availability of academic options. Many careers would employ people that are educated or
trained in schools. However, only schools located somewhere else can accommodate your career plans thus the need to
relocate. This factor is important because studying or training also needs a degree of comfortability for maximum
learning. Comfortability in terms of school amenities that are available for conducive learning, school culture for helpful
interaction, and environmental features for easier adjustment. Deciding on a career goes together with choosing a school
that can help you pursue that career.
Factor 7: PERSONAL VALUES
- Which careers are more fulfilling?
- What kind of job upholds my values?
- What is my purpose?
Behavior is guided by rules and regulations that are innate or unwritten. These set of rules and regulations are guide
in behaving properly or in putting preferences. If personal values are not considered in choosing a career, acting out
required tasks will always invoke feelings of guilt and discomfort.
Factor 8: PERSONAL TRAITS AND CHARACTERISITCS
- What traits do I have?
- What personal assets can I develop?
- How can I qualify myself?
This are innate qualities we have or we don’t have. It is important to know that when we look for a job, we need to be
qualified. Some jobs/careers require certain standard or trait that we may not possess. Height, weight, appearance, health,
and even sex, are among the many qualifications that limit employment options. If this is the case, we should plan for a
career that will make our potentials employable.
Factor 9: COMPENSATIONS AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES
- What will be a high paying career?
- How much should I expect?
- Will I be satisfied with the compensation of the career?
This factor is about the rewards of employment-salary. High paying careers are getting more and more difficult to
pursue. It is but natural to think of the compensation we will get from our planned career. Some careers however give
more personal satisfaction rather than the material rewards. Compensation therefore is not only in terms of money.
Careers that have high paying jobs are not an assurance of life contentment. This factor also talks about job opportunities.
Some careers are saturated with graduates because it is a career that a lot of people want, thus lessening the possibility of
getting employed. Many school graduates end up in a job they did not plan for because they chose a career that is no
longer employable.
Factor 10: PERSONAL CALLING
- What is the best path set out for me?
- Who do I owe my blessings?
- What is my calling?
The last factor is the ultimate factor that we sometimes neglect to consider. Praying for guidance in planning a career,
is believing that there is a right path for us. Faith is important in order to sustain hope. Hope is important in time of great
crises. High school students who are about to graduate are in a crisis they need to face. Making the right decision is
necessary and putting faith in our career plans is a must.
The “X” stands for something that is unknown. The “X” actually stands for the 10 factors that will help us in
planning for our career. This is simpler than the factors presented in the occupational formula. Each of the 10 factors can
be classified into two: INTERNAL factors (factors 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8), the factors that you can improve/control; and
EXTERNAL factors (factors 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10), the factors that you cannot control. To make this work, all you need to do

MODULE 10 – PDev’t Subject Teacher:

is to choose among the 10 factors presented and prioritize them according to how you find each factor important. When
you think that one factor is more important than another, give it more consideration when making your career plan.

INTERESTS AND ABILITIES IN CAREER PLANNING

Interests and abilities are two of the most important factors in planning your career. if you know yourself, in
terms of your strengths and weaknesses, you would not have too much difficulty identifying your interests and
enumerating your abilities. Some teens, however, would need to know more about themselves and might be having a
difficult time getting to know their interests and abilities.

You can see from this activity that career planning starts with self-discovery. Getting more information about
yourself is the first step to knowing what career you are planning. If your interests and abilities are the same, the better
opportunities may be made available. If, however, your interests and abilities vary, you need to sit down and think very
carefully by weighing which will be more advantageous to your career plans.
