Separating Technique
What I Have Learned
1. Differentiate pure substance from mixture. Cite an example. Pure substances can either be element or
compound, while Mixture is a combination of two or more pure substances. Mixture can be further classify
into homogeneous (solution) which is a uniform mixture of substances and heterogeneous mixture (colloid
and suspension) which is the unequal distribution of substances which results in a non-uniform mixture.
Mixtures can be separated into their different pure substances components through their physical
properties. Pure substances have their own unique physical properties such as density, state of matter,
melting point, boiling point and solubility. Scientists needed to have understanding of these physical
properties to separate them.
2. Explain the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture. Cite an example. A
homogeneous mixture has a uniform composition throughout its mass whereas a heterogeneous mixture
has a non- uniform composition. A mixture of alcohol and water is homogeneous whereas a mixture of
sodium chloride and sand is heterogeneous
3. Cite two (2) industrial application of fractional distillation.
•Fractional distillation is used for the purification of water as well as separating acetone and water.
•Fractional distillation is used in several industries like oil refineries and chemical plants mainly for
purification and separation of many organic compounds.
4. Give three (3) techniques or methods we can used in separating mixture. Cite an example in each
technique or method.
1. Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension or as a vapor
(as in gas chromatography) through a medium in which the components move at different rates.
Thin-layer chromatography is a special type of chromatography used for separating and identifying
mixtures that are or can be colored, especially pigments.
2. Distillation is an effective method to separate mixtures comprised of two or more pure liquids.
Distillation is a purification process where the components of a liquid mixture are vaporized and
then condensed and isolated. In simple distillation, a mixture is heated and the most volatile
component vaporizes at the lowest temperature. The vapor passes through a cooled tube (a
condenser), where it condenses back into its liquid state. The condensate that is collected is called
distillate.
3. Filtration is a separation method used to separate out pure substances in mixtures comprised of
particles some of which are large enough in size to be captured with a porous material. Particle size
can vary considerably, given the type of mixture. For instance, stream water is a mixture that
contains naturally occurring biological organisms like bacteria, viruses, and protozoans. Some water
filters can filter out bacteria, the length of which is on the order of 1 micron. Other mixtures, like
soil, have relatively large particle sizes, which can be filtered through something like a coffee filter.
What I Can Do
Directions: Answer the questions below.
1. Describe what method you would use to obtain: a. Pure water from a mixture of ink and water. b. Petrol
(boiling point 20 60 C) from a mixture of petrol and kerosene (boiling point 180 220 C)
a. The method I will use to obtain pure water from a mixture of ink and water is Fractional Distillation
b. I would use Distillation.
2. A student used a pen to draw a line across a piece of chromatography paper. He then placed a sample of
dye on the drawn line for analysis. Is the student doing the right thing? Why?
Yes, the components present in the ink of the pen will be separated upon being dissolved by the solvent. The
chromatogram obtained eventually will contain a mixture of spots that include both the components of ink
from the pen and the dye. Thus, the accuracy of the analysis ofthe sample of dye is affected.

Additional Activities
It’s not often that scientists have to go to the front line of a war zone, but that’s what happened recently in
Syria. The government there, which is fighting in a civil war, had used poisonous gas against the rebels. But
before the United Nations could demand that Syria give up its chemical weapons it had to prove what was in
them. That’s where the scientists came in. Travelling in very dangerous areas where they could be shot at
any time, the chemists moved through the war zone collecting samples from where the gas had been used.
Fortunately, they did so safely and got the samples back to the lab. The next job was to analyze the samples
to see exactly what gas had been used. They used a two-step technique called gas chromatography–mass
spectrometry. The first step separates the sample into its components. The second step identities the
components by identifying signature chemical properties. The scientists proved that the poisonous gas sarin
had been used and so the United Nations was able to force Syria to destroy its chemical weapons. Article:
