“Abortion not to be legalized in the Philippines”
Abortion is one of the most controversial issues and a very sensitive
topic especially with the fact that it is considered a crime. Many are arguing
about the legalization of it in our country and people have different opinions
about it. This issue is very difficult not having an agreement between both
sides. Abortion is a procedure that ends a pregnancy by removing the
embryo or fetus and placenta from the uterus. Many are against it because it
simply ends the life of an innocent being. According to some, it must be
legalized for it is the mother’s decision whether to keep the baby or not. For
me, Abortion must not be legalized instead sex education must be taught
and normalized.
Abortion must not be legalized for it is against the law. Some
pregnancies are unintended and unplanned especially if it was a result of
sexual assault but it doesn’t give anyone the right to end an innocent life.
Abortion affects the health of a person. Undergoing an abortion may risk the
woman’s health physically, mentally, and emotionally. Abortion must not be
legalized for it gives the people the permission to be more irresponsible in
sex. People will then have the mentality that it is ok not to use protection
because there is an abortion afterward.
The first reason why we must not legalize abortion is that it is against
the law. Some say that it is the right of the woman to choose and make their
own decisions but it doesn’t give them the right to decide whether to end an
innocent life or not. We all know that rape is rampant in our country and so
is abortion. According to the survey of ‘Philippine Star’ there are 18 rape
cases in our country every day and some results in unintended pregnancies.
These unintended pregnancies traumatize the rape victims and it left them
no choice but to abort the baby to end their sufferings. However, I must say
that it isn’t the child’s fault and they shouldn’t be the one to be punished for
it isn’t their choice to be made. It is just a product of an unfortunate event
and the baby itself is also a victim. If the mother does not want to keep the
baby, she should just give it up for adoption where the child is given a
chance to live and experience life. I think that abortion should not be
legalized in the Philippines for there are laws that are against it. Article II of
the 1987 Philippine Constitution says, in part, "Section 12. The State
recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the
family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the
life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception."The act is
criminalized by Philippine law. Articles 256, 258, and 259 of the Revised
Penal Code of the Philippines mandate imprisonment for women who
undergo an abortion, as well as for any person who assists in the procedure.
Abortion, therefore, is unconstitutional.
The second reason why abortion must not be legalized is that it affects
women’s health not just physically but also mentally and emotionally.
According to ‘Foundations of life organization’ these are the risk of
abortion. Side effects may occur with induced abortion, whether surgical or
by pill. These include abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, vomiting, and
diarrhea. Abortion also carries the risk of significant complications such as
bleeding, infection, and damage to organs. Serious complications occur in
less than 1 out of 100 early abortions and in about 1 out of every 50 later
abortions. Complications may include: Heavy Bleeding, Infection,
Incomplete Abortion, Damage to the Cervix, Scarring of the Uterine Lining,
Perforation of the Uterus, Damage to Internal Organs, Death, Consider
Other Risks of Abortion, Abortion and Preterm Birth for future pregnancies,
Links to Abortion and Breast Cancer. It may also affect emotional and
mental health. There is evidence that abortion is associated with a decrease
in both emotional and physical health. For some women, these negative
emotions may be very strong and can appear within days or after many
years. This psychological response is a form of post-traumatic stress
disorder. Possible symptoms: Eating disorders, Relationship problems,
Guilt, Depression, Flashbacks of abortion, Suicidal thoughts, Sexual
dysfunction, Alcohol and drug abuse, and Spiritual Consequences. Abortion
I must say is very risky and dangerous.
Lastly, Abortion must not be legalized for it gives people permission
to be more irresponsible in sex. Irresponsible sex is the issue behind
abortion because people don’t tend to use protection during intercourse. We
all know that early pregnancies are very rampant in our country and this is
because of being irresponsible during sex. People always think of
satisfaction without even thinking of the consequences of their actions.
Early pregnancies are often to undergo an abortion because they believe that
having a child at their young age will ruin their future. However, I must say
that it is a selfish act for them to do that well, in fact, it is they who ruined
their own lives by being irresponsible. People like this think that it is their
‘right to choose’ so no one has the right to call them out for their actions.
Legalizing abortion will worsen people’s mentality in having safe and
responsible sex because they will be given an option and that is to undergo
an abortion. We all have the right to make our own decisions, to choose, and
to speak for ourselves but it doesn’t give us the right to kill an innocent
being. Abortion I must say is not an option for our irresponsible actions.
However, legalizing abortion also has an advantage. Legalizing
abortion will decrease population growth, it will decrease the rate of child
abuse and it will make the procedure safer. Abortion helps control
population growth which is the main reason for poverty. Abortion will
decrease the rate of child abuse because of unwanted pregnancies.
Legalizing abortion will make the procedure safer because women will no
longer undergo unsafe procedures.
Abortion must not be legalized because of the following reasons. First
is that it is considered a crime and it is unconstitutional. The second is that it
is very risky and dangerous to undergo the procedure of abortion. Lastly is
that it will tolerate irresponsible sex and worsen people’s mentality on this
matter.
The legalization of abortion is really a sensitive matter for it is a
matter of life and death. There are many factors to consider and it includes
the feelings of those women who chose to undergo an abortion. There are
many pros and cons to this topic and every opinion matter. For me, abortion
must not be legalized but we must educate people to be responsible for their
actions. Prevention is better than cure and education is much better than
having an abortion as an option. We must think of the consequences of our
decisions before we make an action because it is better to be careful early
than to repent later. Therefore I conclude that Abortion must not be
legalized.
