THE GESTURE INTERFACE
At the moment, if we want mobile (26)________ to the Web, we have to travel around with things like tablets and
smartphones in our bags or pockets. But the inventor of something called the Gesture Interface has come up with a
way of doing this using only something we've (27)________ around with us for millions of years - our hands.
The idea is based on simple technology that is already in existence. (28)________ carrying around the usual
hardware, you have a small wearable device on your hands. This contains a projector, a camera and wireless
technology to (29)________ you to the Web. It also has sensors (30)________ read and interpret simple hand
gestures. For example, when you want to take a photograph, simply make a frame around the image with your
hand and click your fingers. The device work out what you want and operates the camera

CO2 plays a critical role in maintaining the balance in the Earth’s atmosphere and the air that we breathe. It is also
waste product of the fossil fuels that almost every person on the planet uses for transport and other energy
requirements. Because we create CO2 every time we drive a car, cook a meal or turn on a light, and because the
gas lasts around a century in the atmosphere, the proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere is rapidly increasing.
The best evidence indicates that we need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 70 per cent by 2050. If you own a
four-wheel-drive car and replace it with a hybrid car- a car that is powered by a combination of electricity and
petrol – or a smaller standard-fuel car, you can achieve a reduction of that magnitude in a day rather than half a
century. Unfortunately, our past history of change is considerably slower than this. Samuel Bowser first invented
the petrol pump in 1885 but it wasn’t until 1988 that new cars manufactured in the UK were required to use
unleaded petrol only.
Not only do fossil fuels pose an environmental hazard but there is also a pressing need to find an alternative
energy source that is renewable. Opinions as to how much oil remains vary considerably. Some say that the Earth
has produced only 18 per cent of its potential yield of oil; others say supplies may run out as early as 2025. Many
countries are exploring alternative energy sources such as solar energy or wind power, which uses large turbines to
capture the energy of the wind.

Question 31: What is the passage mainly about?
A. The increase of CO2 in the atmosphere B. The future of energy
C. The exhaustion of fossil fuels D. Energy supplies
Question 32: According to the passage, all of the following are mentioned as contributors to reducing CO 2
emissions EXCEPT_________.
A. hybrid cars B. smaller standard-fuel cars
C. cars using unleaded petrol D. four-wheel-drive cars
Question 33: The word ''which'' in paragraph 3 refers to_________.
A. alternative energy B. solar energy C. wind powerD. countries
Question 34: The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is considerably growing because_________.
A. it is created by human’s daily activities
B. people create cars, meals and lights every time
C. it lasts around a century in the atmosphere
D. every person on the planet uses for transport economically
Question 35: The word '' manufactured '' in paragraph 2 mostly means_________.
A. destroyed B. disappeared C. produced D. required
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the answer to each of the question.
In Death Valley, California, one of the hottest, most arid places in North America, there is much salt, and
salt can damage rocks impressively. Inhabitants of areas elsewhere, where streets and highways are salted to
control ice, are familiar with the resulting rust and deterioration on cars. That attests to the chemically corrosive
nature of salt, but it is not the way salt destroys rocks. Salt breaks rocks apart principally by a process called
crystal prying and wedging. This happens not by soaking the rocks in salt water, but by moistening their bottoms
with salt water. Such conditions exist in many areas along the eastern edge of central Death Valley. There, salty
water rises from the groundwater table by capillary action through tiny spaces in sediment until it reaches the
surface.
Most stones have capillary passages that suck salt water from the wet ground. Death Valley provides an
ultra-dry atmosphere and high daily temperatures, which promote evaporation andthe formation of salt crystals
along the cracks or other openings within stones. These crystals grow as long as salt water is available. Like tree
roots breaking up a sidewalk, the growing crystals exert pressure on the rock and eventually pry the rock apart
along planes of weakness, such as banding in metamorphic rocks, bedding in sedimentary rocks, or preexisting or
incipient fractions, and along boundaries between individual mineral crystals or grains. Besides crystal growth, the
expansion of halite crystals (the same as everyday table salt) by heating and of sulfates and similar salts by
hydration can contribute additional stresses. A rock durable enough to have withstood natural conditions for a very
long time in other areas could probably be shattered into small pieces by salt weathering within a few generations.
The dominant salt in Death Valley is halite, or sodium chloride, but other salts, mostly carbonates and
sulfates, also cause prying and wedging, as does ordinary ice. Weathering by a variety of salts, though often subtle,
is a worldwide phenomenon. Not restricted to arid regions, intense salt weathering occurs mostly in salt-rich
places like the seashore, near the large saline lakes in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica, and in desert sections of
Australia, New Zealand, and central Asia.

Question 36. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The destructive effects of salt on rocks.
B. The impressive salt rocks in Death Valley.
C. The amount of salt produced in Death Valley.
D. The damaging effects of salt on roads and highways.
Question 37. The word "it" in line 7 refers to ______.

Question 38. The word "exert" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. replace B. reduce C. put D. control
Question 39: In lines 13-17, why does the author compare tree roots with growing salt crystals?
A. They both cause salty water to rise from the groundwater table.
B. They both grow as long as water is available.
C. They both react quickly to a rise in temperature.
D. They both force hard surfaces to crack.
Question 40. The word "dominant" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A. most recent B. most common
C. least available D. least damaging
Question 41. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about the effects of salts on rocks?
A. Only two types of salts cause prying and wedging.
B. Salts usually cause damage only in combination with ice.
C. A variety of salts in all kinds of environments can cause weathering.
D. Salt damage at the seashore is more severe than salt damage in Death Valley.
Question 42. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage about rocks that are found in areas where
ice is common?
A. They are protected from weathering.
B. They do not allow capillary action of water.
C. They show similar kinds of damage as rocks in Death Valley.
D. They contain more carbonates than sulfates.
