六段 6th Dan Rokkudan 七段 7th Dan Nanadan
八段 8th Dan Hachidan 九段 9th Dan Kyudan
These ranks will be awarded on merit. The student will demonstrate exceptional
knowledge and skill both in the Dojo and outside on all topics studied within the
Mahoutsukai Dojo. A student must demonstrate the highest principles within the
Dojo.
Gi 義 Integrity
Always ensure we are acting in the best interest of others. Always ensure we are
correct in our ethics. Try to ensure we are always ‘doing the right thing’. Try to be a
complete person.
Yu 勇 Bravery
Stand up for what you believe in. Have the strength and fortitude to stand in the face
of injustice and do what must be done. Bravery is not imposing yourself or views
upon others. Bravery is not stepping in where you are not needed.
Jin 仁 Compassion
Try to be unbiased or unprejudiced. Have compassion for those who require your
help or need your protection. Compassion is also knowing when not to step in, to not
allow oneself to become a crutch for those who can stand on their own feet, but
choose not to.
Rei 礼 Courtesy・ Respect
To have courtesy is not always saying what people want to hear, but saying what
must be said with respect and dignity. Courtesy is treating others as equals or
superiors, no matter their true position, so as to show humility.
15 | P a g e
Makoto 真 Sincerity ・ Honesty
Sincerity and truthfulness go hand-in-hand. Never lie to someone, even to make
them feel better. Never misrepresent yourself or those in your charge. Always tell the
most complete truth possible, no matter the consequences.
Chuugi 忠義 Loyalty・ Duty
Never betray those who trust you. Never turn your back on your obligations. Never
lie for another person, and never lie about them. Never reveal a hurtful truth to
another. Never give out the secrets you're given. This is loyalty.
Meiyo 名誉 Honour
Honour is the hardest to know. Honour is not causing a fight, nor is it found in
revenge. Honour is not a medallion you show off to those who will listen. Honour is
not tales of the past to impress those of the present. Honour is living with discipline,
control, and humility. Honour is being Loyal, Sincere, Polite, Compassionate, Brave,
and truly Righteous. Honour is NOT face! Often times, in taking a loss of face, an
insult, without reaction or retaliation to it, one's Honour grows! Honour is ones gift to
oneself.
Students of these ranks are leaders within the Dojo and are expected to act so.
十段 10th Dan Judan – Shihan 師範
Only Soke can award this rank and above. A student may be recommended for the rank (by
other Shihan), but ultimately it is Soke’s decision on whether to award it. Please talk to any Chief
Instructor regarding this rank.
