Basic Laboratory Glassware

This document provides an introduction to common laboratory glassware and equipment used in chemistry. It explains that choosing the right tools and using them properly ensures safe experimentation and more reliable results. The objective is to be able to identify various glassware and understand their intended functions, such as beakers for holding or mixing substances, Erlenmeyer flasks for reactions, funnels for transferring liquids, graduated cylinders for accurate volume measurements, pipets for precise liquid transfers, spatulas for handling solids, stirring rods for mixing, test tubes for heating substances, clamps and racks for holding tools and tubes, and wash bottles and watch glasses for rinsing.

Introduction to Basic Laboratory Glassware and Equipment

Introduction

Chemistry as a central science involves experimentation that includes careful

observations and good laboratory techniques. Identifying the right glassware or
equipment to use in the lab and knowing how to properly use it will help ensure safe
laboratory practices.
Each glassware is designed precisely for a particular purpose. Some are used
for situations where a more accurate volume measurement is required and others can
be used only for approximate measurements. Choosing the appropriate tool for
measurement will not only save time and effort required to get a more reliable data but
also prevent damages caused by improper handling.

Objective:

To be able to identify common laboratory glassware and understand their

uses.

I. Common Laboratory Apparatus

A. Identify and give the function of each laboratory glassware or equipment.
