TUTORIAL CHAPTER 9
Based on my understanding on this case study is, this organization was having a great deal
of change in the company’s structure which led to greater market share and faster cycle
times to market. The company then ask help from an external consultant to solve these
changes through a strategic planning workshop. But there is a problem during the workshop.
The first thing the consultant conduct is an interview individually among the team. The senior
team believed that the whole team were committed with the workshop’s goals and objective.
Unfortunately, they only discuss the objectives individually not as a team. During the
workshop, there are a sudden decrease percentage on participants’ level of enthusiasm and
energy for the organizational culture and the issues in the team that they agreed to solve.
But there are two dominant members who did not want to solve the issues happen in the
team as what have been agreed. Both refused to solve the issues regarding to team-building
and culture issues. The other employee in the team did not want to have a conflict or did not
want to confront with these two dominant members. The strategic planning work is the only
acceptable topic in the team. The company’s senior leader also has monopolized all the
discussion. In the next month, the consultant come out with new strategy for the team, but
they refuse and against it. The workshop was not a success because the whole team were
not ready for the change that going to happen in the organization. The consultant was
surprised by the political environment that appear during the workshop and the consultant
realized that there are a long-term objective of the engagement is still not being achieve. The
team should accept the consultant suggestion to solve the issues happen in the teams so
that they will be ready for the new intervention in the organization. Plus, they also need to
discuss the objective of this workshop as a team not individually.
