Self- directed Learning

Self-directed learners don't anticipate someone to direct them - instead, they recognize that

they control what, how, and when they learn. Self-directed learners consistently hunt down

the chance to complement themselves through learning and are intrinsically motivated to

learn (University of the people, n.d.).

Self-directed learning remains one of the foremost successful learning strategies a student

can use. Self-directed learners tend to be learners who learn more effectively, retain more of

what they learned, and transfer what they learned to new contexts (University of the people,

n.d.).

Motivation is an important aspect of self – directed learning that I feel should be at the

highest of the list as I believe that nobody can live without it. Other aspects like consistency,

self-diagnosis and having the ability to decide on the correct resources are essential to self-

direct learning (HomeworkLib, n.d.).

I think the largest strengths i've got not only as a student but also in my daily life are

having the ability to remain motivated in any situation or challenge that my come my way

and staying focused on the task needed to be done whether or not it's at college, work or any

other environment. Both of these strengths always help me bring out the most effective of my

ability to achieve my goals.

Two weaknesses that I find myself being more liable to are consistency and stress when

working under pressure. These are two things that I need to work on and improve but it

doesn't worry me as I think that practice makes perfect and this is something that I will be

able to practice until perfection.

I attempt to use three strategies that I feel will help me pursue more self-directed learning.

The primary one is to keep your goals realistic. It’s easy to get discouraged once we don’t

achieve what we would like to. Attempt to keep things in perspective and make goals you'll

be able to reasonably reach. The second is to value progress over performance. Through our

entire life we never stop learning, and that’s one among the numerous reasons why self-

directed learning is so enjoyable. The more topics, questions, and problems we encounter, the

more opportunities to feel stimulated and accomplished we will have. And last but not least is

to always practice using what you’ve learned (Saga Briggs, 2015).

We all value gaining knowledge but we need to make an effort to use it, as well. Create

your own opportunities to use your knowledge and you’ll find the results very rewarding

(Briggs, 2015).

In order to grow as a self- direct learner, each individual must take all these things in

count and use them as much as possible.
